Cyprus Iran Spy: UK Seeks Extradition of Suspect Over RAF Base Surveillance
Cyprus Iran spy investigations have intensified after British authorities requested the extradition of a 44-year-old dual British and Azerbaijani national accused of spying on RAF Akrotiri for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The suspect remains in custody in Cyprus while the courts consider Britain’s extradition request.
Cyprus Iran Spy Case Targets RAF Akrotiri
British investigators claim the suspect carried out surveillance at RAF Akrotiri between May and June 2025.
Authorities allege he collected sensitive information about the military base before passing it to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
The UK has charged him under the National Security Act 2023.
UK Uses National Security Act
The investigation marks the first overseas case brought under Britain’s National Security Act.
Officials say the legislation allows prosecutors to pursue people accused of assisting foreign intelligence services outside the United Kingdom.
Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation with support from the Crown Prosecution Service and the National Crime Agency.
Cyprus and UK Continue Cooperation
Cypriot police arrested the suspect on July 17 following a request from British authorities.
Investigators from both countries continue working together while extradition proceedings move forward.
Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect is linked to another espionage investigation reported in Cyprus earlier this year.
