Hideo Kojima has found a new home for his upcoming action-espionage game PHYSINT after PlayStation ended its involvement with the project.
Kojima Productions confirmed that Xbox will now partner with the studio on the game. The move comes after Sony unexpectedly stepped away from PHYSINT in June.
The change marks a major shift for Kojima. His career has a long history with PlayStation, especially through the Metal Gear franchise.
Hideo Kojima Confirms New Xbox Partnership
Kojima said PlayStation Studios informed his team in mid-June that it would cancel the PHYSINT project.
The decision forced Kojima Productions to search for another partner. The studio spent about three months exploring options.
Eventually, Kojima said the team found a strong match with Xbox.
He described the companies as sharing a common vision for the future. Xbox has now joined the project as Kojima Productions continues development.
Xbox also confirmed the expanded partnership. The company said Kojima’s creative approach fits its desire to support ambitious and unconventional projects.
PHYSINT Returns Kojima to Spy Games
PHYSINT represents a return to the action-espionage genre that helped make Kojima famous.
The creator built his reputation with Metal Gear, a groundbreaking stealth series that became closely associated with PlayStation during the 1990s and 2000s.
Kojima Productions describes PHYSINT as a genre-defining action-espionage title.
The project began as a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Sony. However, PlayStation has now left the project.
Despite that setback, Kojima says development will continue.
PlayStation Ends Its Role
PlayStation said it made the decision after careful consideration. The company also stressed that its relationship with Kojima Productions remains strong.
Sony has worked with Kojima for decades. Therefore, its decision to step away from PHYSINT marks a notable change.
Kojima Productions, meanwhile, confirmed that Xbox is now its new partner for the project. The studio said Xbox understands its creative vision.
The partnership also goes beyond video games.
Xbox and Kojima Productions plan to explore projects across film and television. That could expand their relationship into other forms of entertainment.
No Release Date Yet
Kojima has not announced a release date for PHYSINT.
He also has not confirmed whether Xbox will make the game exclusive to its consoles.
The project remains in development. As a result, more details could emerge as production moves forward.
Kojima is also working with Xbox on OD, another major project. That collaboration helped establish a relationship between the two sides before the PHYSINT deal.
For now, fans of Kojima’s classic spy-game style will have to wait. Still, the Xbox partnership ensures that PHYSINT remains alive despite PlayStation’s exit.
The move gives Kojima another chance to build a new espionage franchise while returning to the genre that defined much of his career.
