Sugar restriction in infancy could significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease later in life, according to new research that examined the long-term effects of early childhood nutrition.
Scientists found that limiting sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life may improve brain health, lower dementia risk, and reduce the chances of developing anxiety and depression in adulthood.
World War II Created a Natural Research Opportunity
Because it would be unethical to deliberately restrict babies’ diets for research, scientists turned to a unique historical event in the United Kingdom.
During and after World War II, strict sugar rationing meant that children under the age of two received little to no sugar. When rationing ended in September 1953, sugar consumption across the country increased dramatically, allowing researchers to compare different generations exposed to varying sugar levels.
Sugar Restriction in Infancy Linked to Lower Alzheimer’s Risk
Researchers from China analyzed medical records from 60,394 people born between 1951 and 1956 using data from the UK Biobank.
Participants were divided into three groups based on their exposure to sugar rationing:
- Exposure only during pregnancy
- Exposure during pregnancy and early childhood
- No exposure to sugar restrictions
The findings showed that individuals who experienced sugar restriction in infancy had:
- 27% lower risk of dementia
- 46% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease
- 20% lower risk of anxiety
- 11% lower risk of depression
The study found no significant relationship between early sugar intake and Parkinson’s disease.
Brain Scans Show Healthier Brain Aging
Researchers also examined MRI scans from 9,053 participants to understand how early nutrition affected brain structure.
The scans revealed that people exposed to lower sugar intake early in life had brains that appeared approximately 0.39 years younger than expected.
