The Tooro Kingdom new king has been chosen following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became famous after taking the throne at just three years old.
According to the Associated Press, a royal selection committee named Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as crown prince on Wednesday. Kijanangoma is a cousin of the late king and works as a news anchor and editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
The decision comes less than two weeks after Oyo died from cancer at the age of 34.
Journalist Selected for the Tooro Throne
Kijanangoma is known as a broadcaster rather than a traditional political figure.
His selection appears to offer the kingdom an adult monarch who can provide continuity without placing another young child on the throne.
The Tooro Kingdom has strong cultural importance in western Uganda. However, its monarch has no formal political authority under Uganda’s constitution.
The kingdom is one of several traditional institutions that Uganda restored in 1993 after they were abolished following independence.
King Oyo Was Once the World’s Youngest Monarch
Oyo became king in 1995 following the death of his father.
He was only three years old at the time, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
His coronation attracted international attention. As a child, Oyo became a familiar figure at major national events and later grew into a respected cultural leader.
He eventually took on wider public responsibilities, including work as a United Nations goodwill ambassador focused on HIV and AIDS.
Oyo died on August 27, 2026, while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. He was 34.
Succession Decision Sparks Dispute
The choice of Kijanangoma has already created controversy within the royal family.
Oyo’s sister, Ruth Komuntale, rejected the decision and said the late king had left a written will identifying an heir.
She described the selection as potentially divisive and said it could create turmoil within the kingdom.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had also previously said that Oyo left behind a young son who could inherit the throne.
The succession committee nevertheless selected Kijanangoma.
Funeral for King Oyo Draws Thousands
Oyo’s funeral is expected to attract tens of thousands of mourners.
His body returned to Uganda earlier this month after his death in the United States. President Museveni was among those who received the king’s body at Entebbe International Airport.
The burial is scheduled to take place at the royal tombs near the Tooro palace in Fort Portal.
For many Batooro people, the funeral marks the end of an era that began when Oyo inherited the throne as a small child.
Tooro Monarchy Has Cultural Influence
Although Uganda’s traditional kingdoms have no formal sovereignty, they continue to play an important cultural role.
The monarchs act as guardians of local traditions, history and identity.
Tooro’s royal institution dates back generations and remains particularly influential among the Batooro people.
The kingdom’s restoration in 1993 allowed its traditional institutions to return after decades of abolition.
Another Child Monarch Was Avoided
The selection of an adult successor appears particularly significant because Oyo’s reported heir is still young.
Choosing an experienced broadcaster could therefore appeal to members of the royal establishment who want stability after Oyo’s death.
However, the disagreement over Oyo’s alleged heir could make the succession process difficult.
A legal challenge or further dispute cannot be ruled out if royal supporters continue to contest the committee’s decision.
Conflicting Reports Add Uncertainty
There is also conflicting reporting over who has actually been selected to succeed Oyo.
The Associated Press reported Kijanangoma’s selection, while Reuters separately reported that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was named the new king.
Other later reports have identified George Desmond Kamurasi, a London-based football goalkeeper, as the person selected by a royal committee. That account conflicts with the AP and Reuters reports and has not been reconciled publicly.
The succession is therefore likely to remain under close attention until the kingdom formally completes the coronation process.
Tooro Kingdom Enters a New Era
The death of King Oyo brought an end to one of the most unusual royal stories in modern Africa.
He entered the throne as a three-year-old boy and remained a symbolic leader for more than three decades.
Now, the Tooro Kingdom new king faces the challenge of maintaining that legacy while dealing with questions over succession.
Whatever the final outcome, the next monarch will inherit a kingdom with deep cultural roots and a population closely attached to its royal institution.
