US Coal Power Gets New Support Push Under Trump

US coal power plant supported by new energy proposals

The National Coal Council has urged the Trump administration to provide financial support for existing coal-fired power plants and help finance new facilities. The group says these steps would strengthen America’s energy sector and improve long-term electricity reliability.

Council members presented the recommendations during a meeting in Washington. They asked the US Department of Energy to expand support for coal-related projects.

Coal Industry Requests Financial Assistance

Industry leaders proposed grants, loan guarantees and other financial incentives for coal-fired power plants and supply chain projects.

They also encouraged the federal government to invest in coal infrastructure. Another recommendation called for long-term power purchase agreements to support electricity generation from coal.

According to the council, these measures would protect energy security while supporting jobs across the mining and power industries.

Trump Revives National Coal Council

President Donald Trump restored the National Coal Council after the previous administration left it inactive.

The advisory group includes executives from major coal companies such as Peabody Energy, Warrior Met Coal and Core Natural Resources.

The council advises the Department of Energy on policies that affect the coal industry.

Industry Pushes for Regulatory Reforms

Industry representatives also want the administration to remove regulations that they believe delay new coal-fired power projects.

In addition, they recommended simplifying federal coal leasing procedures. They also called for the repeal of greenhouse gas rules that apply to coal facilities.

Supporters argue these changes would attract more investment and increase domestic energy production.

Coal Still Plays a Major Energy Role

Coal production in the United States rose by about 3% last year to approximately 528 million tonnes. Higher electricity demand and rising natural gas prices contributed to the increase.

Coal generated around 17% of US electricity in 2025. Although renewable energy continues to expand, coal remains an important part of the country’s energy mix.

The Trump administration has repeatedly highlighted the need for diverse energy sources. Officials continue to describe coal as a key contributor to America’s electricity supply.
