Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Wednesday that Tehran and Oman had reached an understanding on sharing revenues linked to the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement came a day after senior Iranian and Omani diplomats met in Tehran to discuss the future of the vital waterway.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi said negotiations had covered how Iran and Oman would divide revenue connected to their respective waters. He also accused the United States of creating obstacles to efforts aimed at finalizing an agreement.
Iran and Oman Discuss Strait of Hormuz
Iran and Oman have spent weeks discussing navigation through the strategic strait. Officials from both countries have said they have agreed on geographical coordinates for a proposed shipping route.
The latest Iran Oman Hormuz deal discussions also included plans for a temporary transit corridor and efforts to clear mines from the waterway. Foreign ministers from both countries held talks in Tehran on Tuesday as negotiations continued.
However, Tehran says the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until Washington addresses several Iranian demands. These include ending the naval blockade, lifting oil sanctions and releasing Iranian assets held abroad.
US and Iran Remain Divided
The future of the waterway remains a major obstacle in efforts to end the conflict between Iran and the United States. Tehran has demanded payment from ships using the strait, while Washington has rejected the proposal.
The Strait of Hormuz plays a crucial role in global energy markets. Around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports normally pass through the waterway.
Iran has maintained a blockade of the strait since the conflict with the United States began on February 28. Washington has responded with a naval counter-blockade around Iranian ports and has threatened additional sanctions.
Mohebi said Iran would reopen the strait only after the United States meets Tehran’s demands. The disagreement means that despite the latest Iran Oman Hormuz deal discussions, a full reopening of the waterway remains uncertain.
