Carcassonne Police: Racist Remarks Trigger Investigation

Carcassonne municipal police face an investigation over racist and extremist remarks recorded during a patrol.

French authorities are investigating municipal police officers in Carcassonne after a leaked patrol video revealed a series of racist, misogynistic and extremist remarks.

The six-hour recording came from a night patrol on November 6, 2025. Local newspaper Midi Libre obtained and published the footage.

One officer’s body camera captured the conversation. The officer reportedly believed the camera had switched off.

According to Midi Libre, the footage contains remarks of “exceptional violence.” The report has since triggered a wider controversy over conduct inside the municipal police force.

Racist and extremist comments recorded

The patrol itself remained mostly quiet. However, the officers repeatedly made offensive comments inside their vehicle.

One officer used a racist slur against a passer-by. The officers also compared Black people to monkeys on two occasions.

The conversation then moved to women and politics. Some comments targeted women with violent and misogynistic language.

Meanwhile, the officers discussed far-right themes. One officer spoke about what he called “civilisational replacement.”

He also claimed that France had moved from Christianity toward Islam under President Emmanuel Macron.

Toward the end of the shift, the discussion became even more serious.

One officer suggested that France needed a military coup and dictatorship. Another officer questioned why such an event had not already happened.

Officers suspended after video emerges

The revelations prompted an immediate response from Carcassonne authorities.

The city council first called the comments unacceptable. Officials also pointed to problems linked to the previous management of the municipal police service.

Later, Carcassonne Mayor Christophe Barthès described the remarks as “sickening.”

The mayor also said authorities had suspended everyone involved.

The Carcassonne public prosecutor’s office later confirmed the suspensions. Authorities also withdrew the officers’ authorisations to perform their duties.

The prosecutor said the officers no longer met the integrity standards required for municipal police work.

Officer had links to France’s far right

The patrol leader has emerged as a central figure in the controversy.

Midi Libre identified him by the initials C.R. The newspaper reported that he made almost 90% of the hateful comments recorded during the patrol.

C.R. is a 50-year-old former paratrooper. According to the report, he also had links to the far-right National Rally, known as RN.

The newspaper reported that he had volunteered with the party’s internal security service.

However, Midi Libre said he did not declare that additional activity to Carcassonne city hall.

The officer also had ties to the city’s newly elected RN mayor, according to the newspaper.

The footage had reportedly circulated internally before authorities took action. C.R. later took sick leave from January to March 2026.

He returned to the night shift on March 16. At that point, according to Midi Libre, authorities had not taken disciplinary action against him.

Investigation could lead to dismissal

The legal consequences could be serious.

Benjamin Cottet-Emard, a lawyer with the Lyon Bar, explained the possible disciplinary consequences.

He said private racist insults may not automatically qualify as a criminal offence in the same way as public insults. However, public officials face separate disciplinary rules.

According to the lawyer, racist comments by a public official can lead to dismissal from public service.

He also said the remarks revealed in the footage appear particularly serious because of their repeated nature.

Cottet-Emard pointed to previous rulings involving police officers who made racist or discriminatory comments.

In one case, the Council of State upheld the dismissal of an officer who made racist and discriminatory comments in a WhatsApp group.

Carcassonne police controversy grows

The investigation now places the conduct of the officers under intense scrutiny.

Authorities must determine the full circumstances surrounding the recordings and the officers’ conduct.

At the same time, the suspensions have increased pressure on the Carcassonne municipal police service.

For critics, the controversy raises wider questions about political extremism, racism and professional standards within law enforcement.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing. However, the publication of the six-hour recording has already forced Carcassonne authorities to take disciplinary action against the officers involved.
