Europe wildfires continue to threaten several countries despite Spain bringing one of its biggest blazes under control. Authorities warn that another powerful heatwave could quickly reverse recent progress, leaving firefighters on high alert across southern Europe.
Spain Stabilises Major Wildfire but New Threats Remain
Spain has stabilised one of its largest wildfires after several days of intense firefighting. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that emergency crews had contained the blaze in central Spain.
Officials have lifted most evacuation and shelter-in-place orders across Ávila Province. However, authorities continue monitoring hotspots, and some emergency restrictions remain in parts of the Madrid region.
Europe Wildfires Spread to Zamora
While central Spain has improved, firefighters now face another growing emergency in Zamora Province.
Officials ordered the evacuation of six towns after a new wildfire intensified. Around 1,000 residents must remain indoors while emergency crews work to stop the flames.
Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has issued orange weather alerts across several regions. Temperatures could reach 40°C, creating dangerous conditions for fresh wildfires.
France Continues Fighting Bordeaux Fires
France also remains under severe pressure as firefighters battle destructive wildfires near Bordeaux.
Although crews kept the largest fire stable overnight, they responded to several new flare-ups during the morning. Officials warn that strong afternoon winds and temperatures of 42°C could rapidly spread the flames again.
Authorities have reopened Bordeaux Airport and several nearby hotels. However, firefighters stress that the emergency is far from over.
Thousands Forced From Their Homes
The wildfire crisis has displaced hundreds of thousands of people across France and Spain.
In southwestern France alone:
- More than 220,000 residents evacuated.
- Around 42,000 hectares of forest burned.
- Homes, businesses and tourism facilities suffered major damage.
Many families have now returned to neighbourhoods where fires destroyed entire properties.
Castellón Fire Still Burns
Emergency crews continue battling another major wildfire in Castellón, eastern Spain.
The blaze has entered its fifth day after destroying more than 10,000 hectares of land. Strong winds and extreme heat continue to trigger dangerous flare-ups.
Nearly 10,000 residents remain displaced as firefighters protect nearby towns.
Wildlife Suffers Heavy Losses
The fires have devastated forests and wildlife throughout the affected regions.
Drone footage from El Tiemblo, west of Madrid, showed scorched landscapes and the remains of deer and other animals that failed to escape the flames.
Scientists continue to link Europe’s increasingly destructive wildfire seasons to climate change and more frequent extreme heatwaves.
