Mexico’s Caribbean coastline is facing its worst sargassum seaweed invasion on record, with massive quantities of the brown algae covering beaches, disrupting tourism and raising growing environmental concerns.

Authorities in the eastern state of Quintana Roo, home to world-famous destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, expect nearly 119,000 tonnes of sargassum to wash ashore by the end of the year. The figure exceeds last year’s record of 96,000 tonnes, making 2026 the most severe season ever recorded.

Tourism Industry Under Pressure

The thick mats of seaweed have transformed many of Mexico’s iconic white-sand beaches into brown, foul-smelling shorelines. Once the seaweed reaches land, it quickly decomposes, producing an unpleasant odour often compared to rotten eggs.

The growing crisis has forced several beaches to close temporarily, while hotels, restaurants and local businesses are experiencing a noticeable decline in visitors.

Tourism officials say the impact has been particularly severe in Tulum and other popular destinations that depend heavily on beach tourism.

Workers continue clearing beaches every day, but fresh waves of seaweed continue arriving, making cleanup efforts increasingly difficult.

Billions Spent on Cleanup

Quintana Roo officials estimate that managing the sargassum crisis costs the state around $2 billion annually, representing approximately 11% of its economic output.

Meanwhile, the Riviera Maya Hotel Association estimates hotels alone spend roughly $150 million every year to remove seaweed from beaches in an effort to protect tourism.

Despite these efforts, environmental monitoring has shown that more than 90% of the state’s beaches recently recorded excessive levels of sargassum.

Environmental Concerns Continue to Grow

Scientists warn that the seaweed invasion is affecting far more than tourism.

Large quantities of decomposing sargassum block sunlight from reaching underwater plants, damaging marine ecosystems and reducing biodiversity. Researchers also warn that decaying algae may release arsenic and other heavy metals into coastal sand.

Studies have also reported that workers involved in daily cleanup operations have experienced skin irritation, headaches, fatigue and nausea after prolonged exposure to decomposing seaweed.

Warmer Oceans Fuel Record Growth

Marine experts believe rising ocean temperatures are one of the main drivers behind the record-breaking bloom.

According to researchers, warmer waters, increased nutrients and extended periods of sunlight have created ideal conditions for sargassum to multiply across the Atlantic before ocean currents carry it into the Caribbean.

Government Expands Response

Mexico’s Navy has intensified efforts to contain the invasion by deploying specialised cleanup vessels, support boats, drones and floating barriers designed to intercept the seaweed before it reaches beaches.

Officials are expected to unveil an updated national response strategy aimed at improving early detection and strengthening coastal protection measures.

Scientists also recommend expanding satellite monitoring and predictive modelling to identify large seaweed blooms before they make landfall, helping authorities respond more effectively in future seasons.
