The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued the advisory on Tuesday. It cited several risks, including Iranian drone and missile attacks against US interests. The warning also covers armed conflict, terrorism and restrictions on leaving Saudi Arabia.
The advisory also tells Americans not to travel near the Yemen border because of terrorism threats. In addition, it highlights Saudi laws covering social media activity. Violations of local rules can carry serious consequences for visitors.
Security Alert Follows Makkah Drone Report
The US warning came after Saudi authorities reported increased security activity around Makkah.
The Saudi-led coalition involved in the Yemen conflict said its air defences intercepted a drone. According to the coalition, Houthi forces launched the drone towards Makkah.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said Saudi air defences detected the aircraft. He said the forces destroyed it before it entered restricted airspace around the holy city.
The statement appeared on social media and described the Houthis as a terrorist militia.
Makkah is Islam’s holiest city. Millions of Muslims visit the city each year. As a result, any reported security incident near Makkah carries particular significance.
Houthis Reject Saudi Account
The Houthi movement rejected the Saudi-led coalition’s account.
Hazem al-Assad, a member of the group’s political bureau, denied that Houthi forces launched a drone towards Makkah.
He made the comments in a statement posted on X. Al-Assad said Saudi authorities had made similar accusations before. He also denied that the group targeted the holy city.
The competing claims have not been independently verified.
