UN Chief Condemns attacks on civilian infrastructure as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the growing conflict could worsen the humanitarian situation and urged all parties to protect civilians, respect international law, and avoid actions that could further destabilize the Middle East.
His remarks came after Iran accused the United States of striking bridges, transportation facilities, and other civilian sites during recent military operations. Washington has not confirmed those claims.
Guterres Expresses Deep Concern
Speaking at a UN briefing, spokesperson Farhan Haq said the Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the worsening military situation and continues monitoring developments across the region.
According to Haq, Guterres believes civilian infrastructure must be protected during armed conflicts, regardless of the circumstances.
“The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned by the continuing military escalation between Iran and the United States,” Haq said.
He added that attacks affecting civilian infrastructure in Iran and other parts of the region could further worsen an already dangerous situation.
Iran Accuses US of Targeting Civilian Sites
Iran has alleged that recent US strikes damaged bridges, transport hubs, and other non-military facilities. Iranian officials argue that these locations serve civilian populations and should receive protection under international humanitarian law.
The United States has not confirmed the allegations. There has also been no independent verification that civilian infrastructure was deliberately targeted.
UN Urges Restraint
The United Nations has repeatedly urged all parties to avoid actions that could intensify the conflict. UN officials warn that continued military exchanges could increase civilian casualties, damage essential infrastructure, and create greater instability across the Middle East.
The UN has also stressed the importance of international humanitarian law, which requires parties to protect civilians and civilian facilities during armed conflict.
Global Pressure for Diplomacy
As the conflict continues, governments and international organizations are renewing calls for dialogue instead of further military escalation. Diplomats fear that prolonged fighting could spread beyond the immediate conflict zone and threaten regional and global stability.
The latest statement from António Guterres reinforces the United Nations’ position that protecting civilian lives and infrastructure must remain a priority. The UN continues urging all sides to pursue diplomatic solutions before the situation deteriorates further.
