President Donald Trump has ordered the US Justice Department to investigate Democrats, accusing them of “threatening” officials with impeachment and other punishment. The Trump DOJ probe order came in a social media post on Saturday, 7 November. He gave no evidence that any crime had been committed, Reuters reported.

The move comes just days after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. They take over in January and have promised tougher oversight of the White House.

What Trump said in the DOJ probe order

In his post, Trump said Democrats were “threatening a lot of people,” including the country’s top law officer, Fox News reported. He was referring to Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Trump called the people involved “EXTORTIONISTS” and said they should be imprisoned. He said he was “ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!” He also called it “extortion at the highest level,” Fox 2 Detroit reported. In addition, he claimed Democrats had sent threatening letters to many innocent people, according to Reuters.

Trump also claimed Democrats were threatening Republican donors with imprisonment. He did not name any of those donors. Furthermore, he rejected the idea that Blanche or other officials had committed “impeachable acts”.

There was no immediate comment from the Justice Department, Reuters said. It is not yet clear whether any formal investigation has been opened.

Slotkin named in the post

The only Democrat Trump named was Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan. He claimed she would “go after all young people that believe in Republican Values,” Fox News reported.

His attack appears linked to remarks Slotkin made on 13 October at the University of Chicago. There, she suggested Congress should look into people who had enabled Trump’s policies. “I want that deterrence message sent,” she said at the time.

Republican Senator Mike Lee accused Slotkin of threatening young people interested in politics. In reply, Slotkin said Lee had lied about her words. “Spare us the manufactured outrage,” she wrote.

On Saturday, Slotkin responded again. “If you break the law or use taxpayer dollars to enrich yourself, you should be held accountable,” she wrote, according to Fox 2 Detroit. On the other hand, she said those who had not broken the law had nothing to worry about, Reuters reported. She also urged Trump to focus on ending the war with Iran, scrapping tariffs and dealing with healthcare cuts due on 1 January.

Democrats plan oversight of the administration

Some House Democrats have openly backed impeaching Blanche. Representative Hank Johnson of Georgia has said Blanche’s conduct is serious enough to justify impeachment and removal from office. Representative Deborah Ross of North Carolina also supports impeachment, Fox News reported, but said Democrats “should start with Hegseth,” a reference to Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth.

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers have released letters seeking documents about tech company donations for the large White House ballroom Trump is building. Democrats have also signalled plans to examine major Republican donors and corporations.

Not the first clash with Slotkin

This is not the first time Slotkin has faced federal scrutiny. The Justice Department earlier investigated her and other Democratic lawmakers with military or intelligence backgrounds. They had posted a video urging service members to refuse illegal orders. However, a grand jury declined to indict them, Reuters and Fox 2 Detroit reported.

Why the order matters

Trump’s critics have long accused him of using the Justice Department against political opponents. His supporters argue that Democrats are the ones abusing power through investigations and impeachment threats. As a result, the new order is likely to deepen the fight over the department’s independence.

The clash also offers an early sign of the battles ahead. From January, Democrats will hold the power to call hearings and issue subpoenas. The White House, for its part, appears ready to push back hard. Whether the Justice Department acts on Trump’s demand will be closely watched in the coming weeks.
