Fans of the Gremlins franchise will have to wait longer for the creatures to return to the big screen.
Warner Bros. has delayed the Gremlins 3 release date from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028.
The change pushes the long-awaited sequel back by almost a year. However, the movie continues to move forward with a major creative team attached.
The delay gives the studio more time to develop the next chapter of the popular horror-comedy series.
Gremlins 3 Brings Back Major Creative Names
The upcoming movie has several filmmakers connected to the original franchise.
John Davis, who produced the previous Gremlins films, is involved with the project. David Weil, known for his work on television, is also attached.
Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer.
Chris Columbus will direct the movie. Columbus wrote the original Gremlins screenplay and later directed films including Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Columbus will also produce the sequel alongside Hannah Marks.
Marks is writing the screenplay from a story developed with Columbus, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.
Gremlins Franchise Keeps Its Original Spirit
The original Gremlins arrived in 1984 under director Joe Dante.
The movie followed Billy Peltzer and Gizmo, a lovable Mogwai whose unusual rules lead to chaos when they are broken.
The film combined comedy, horror and holiday themes. It quickly became a major box-office success and developed a lasting fan base.
Its darker material, along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, also contributed to the creation of the PG-13 rating in the United States.
Gremlins 2 Took the Story in a New Direction
Gremlins 2: The New Batch followed in 1990.
The sequel moved the action from the first film’s small-town setting to a New York skyscraper.
It also adopted a more satirical and cartoon-like tone. Rick Baker and his team expanded the practical creature effects for the sequel.
Although the movie struggled at the box office, it gained a strong cult following over the years.
The franchise has since remained visible through merchandise, theme park references and other Warner Bros. properties.
Gremlins Returns Through Animated Series
The franchise also received a new chapter through animation.
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai premiered on Max as an animated prequel series.
The show explored Gizmo’s origins and took viewers back to 1920s China.
That series helped introduce the Gremlins mythology to a newer generation while keeping the original characters relevant.
