iPhone Handoff Comes to iOS 27

Apple iPhone Handoff feature running on two iPhones with iOS 27

Apple has introduced a new iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27. The feature allows users to switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number on both devices.

Apple first showed iPhone Handoff during its WWDC 2026 keynote in June. The company included the feature among several upcoming iOS 27 updates. However, Apple did not explain how the system would work at the time.

A recent video has now provided a closer look at the feature. MacRumors forum member pdfu shared footage showing iPhone Handoff running on two simulated iPhones through Xcode 27’s Device Hub.

How Apple’s iPhone Handoff works

Users can find iPhone Handoff in the Settings app under the Cellular section. The setup process lets users choose a main iPhone and a companion iPhone.

Apple says the main device keeps its primary eSIM. The companion device receives a companion eSIM. This setup allows users to move between the two iPhones without changing their phone number.

The main iPhone controls the cellular settings. Location sharing can also change depending on which device currently uses the phone number.

The feature could prove useful for people who regularly carry two iPhones. For example, users could keep one device at home while carrying another during work or travel.

Carrier support may be required

Having two compatible iPhones may not be enough to use iPhone Handoff. The feature will likely require support from a mobile carrier.

The MacRumors forum discussion suggests that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could become some of the first carriers to support the feature.

Apple has not yet published a complete list of supported carriers. More details could emerge as iOS 27 approaches its public release.

iOS 27 release expected soon

Apple has spent several months testing iOS 27 through its beta program. The company is expected to release the update later this month.

The final release should provide more information about iPhone Handoff. Apple could also reveal additional carrier requirements before the feature becomes widely available.

For users with multiple iPhones, iPhone Handoff could offer a convenient way to keep one phone number across two devices. The feature also shows Apple’s continued focus on making its cellular services more flexible.
