An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon killed one person on Wednesday, according to Lebanese state media. Israel said its forces targeted Hezbollah positions after the group attacked Israeli soldiers in the area.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone struck the city of Nabatieh. The attack killed one person and wounded another. The agency also reported several other Israeli strikes around the area.
Israel’s military said Hezbollah launched two explosive drones overnight toward Israeli troops near the Ali al-Taher Ridge. The army reported no Israeli casualties. It later said its forces struck Hezbollah infrastructure around Nabatieh.
Israeli Strikes Increase in Southern Lebanon
Israel has stepped up military operations in southern Lebanon in recent weeks. Nabatieh has become a particular focus because of the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge.
Israeli authorities have previously claimed that Hezbollah fighters operate from underground facilities in the area. Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for attacks against Israeli targets in recent weeks.
Israeli airstrikes have continued despite the reduction in cross-border violence. Last week, an Israeli strike killed a woman, while the Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah positions.
On August 15, Israeli strikes killed 11 people, including several children, according to Lebanese authorities. Israel said the attacks killed two Hezbollah commanders. The military described the strikes as retaliation for an attack by the group.
Conflict Continues Along Lebanon Border
Hezbollah entered the wider Middle East conflict in March by attacking Israel. The group said it acted in support of Iran, its regional ally. Israel responded with heavy airstrikes and a ground operation.
Lebanese authorities say the fighting has killed more than 4,300 people. Israeli forces also remain inside a self-declared security zone along the border. The zone extends about 10 kilometres, or six miles, into Lebanese territory.
Violence has declined since a US-Iran memorandum of understanding in June. Israel and Lebanon also reached a framework agreement later that month. However, the situation remains tense in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese authorities continue to report Israeli airstrikes, artillery fire and demolitions in villages and towns near the border. Lebanon’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have killed at least 8,920 people since the hostilities began in October 2023.
The latest violence highlights the fragile situation along the Israel-Lebanon border. Despite the recent reduction in fighting, Israeli strikes and concerns over Hezbollah activity continue to fuel tensions in southern Lebanon.
