The Nigeria miner deaths have triggered protests in Niger state after 37 miners died while in government custody. Police fired tear gas on Friday as crowds gathered outside the civil defense corps office in Minna, the state capital.
The miners had been arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of illegal mining. Nigeria’s civil defense authorities said the deaths were linked to a suspected disease outbreak.
However, survivors gave a different account. They told The Associated Press that the miners died after being suffocated. The conflicting accounts have increased pressure on authorities to establish what happened inside the detention facility.
Government Suspends Civil Defense Commandant
The government responded by suspending the commandant of Niger state’s civil defense corps. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described the incident as unfortunate and said a full investigation would take place.
The minister also said the commandant would remain suspended while the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced a final finding on the cause of the deaths.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Mohammed Idris said officials would not protect anyone found responsible. He also stressed that investigators must be allowed to complete their work before conclusions are reached.
Protesters Demand Answers
Dozens of young people joined Friday’s demonstration. The group included miners and relatives of those who died in custody.
Police surrounded the area near the civil defense office. Officers then used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd. The protest came amid claims that the miners may have been targeted after earlier attacks on security personnel.
Those claims have not been established by the investigation. Authorities are now expected to examine both the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the events that led to the miners’ detention.
Illegal Mining Remains a Major Challenge
Illegal mining is a significant problem in Nigeria. Analysts have warned that money generated from unauthorized mining can help finance armed groups operating in parts of the country.
