Russia said Thursday that it would consider the US invitation for President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said no final decision had been made.
“We certainly receive this kind invitation with appreciation,” Peskov told reporters. He added that Moscow would review the invitation before making a decision.
The Russia G20 invitation for Putin comes after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Washington had invited the Russian president.
Rubio made the announcement after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Putin Could Meet Trump in Miami
The G20 summit is scheduled for December 14 and 15 in Miami, Florida.
The invitation could also create an opportunity for Putin and US President Donald Trump to meet during the summit.
However, the Kremlin said it was too early to discuss a possible agenda for such a meeting. Peskov stressed that no decision had been taken yet.
The two presidents last met in person in Alaska in August 2025. Their discussions included efforts to address the war in Ukraine.
US Pushes Diplomacy Over Ukraine War
Washington’s invitation comes as the Trump administration continues efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump has sought talks with both Moscow and Kyiv since returning to the White House. However, efforts to reach a settlement have yet to produce a breakthrough.
Rubio said the G20 would give Putin a chance to engage with Trump and other world leaders.
Meanwhile, Moscow has continued to say it wants a negotiated settlement rather than a temporary ceasefire.
G20 Summit Set for December
The United States currently holds the G20 presidency.
The summit will bring together leaders from the world’s major advanced and emerging economies.
The December meeting is scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami. The event is expected to draw attention because of ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the Ukraine war.
For now, however, Russia has not confirmed whether Putin will attend. The Kremlin says it will review the invitation and make a decision through diplomatic channels.
