Qualcomm is changing its flagship smartphone strategy for 2027 with two versions of its next-generation mobile processor. The company is preparing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for upcoming Android flagship phones.
The standard version will take over from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Meanwhile, the Extreme edition will sit at the top of Qualcomm’s mobile lineup. Both chips share several major technologies, but their performance and AI capabilities are different.
Shared Hardware Across Both Chips
The two processors are built around Qualcomm’s new Oryon CPU architecture and use a 2nm manufacturing process. Each chip features two Prime cores running at up to 5GHz and six Performance cores reaching 4GHz.
Both processors also include Qualcomm’s new X105 5G modem. The modem supports 3GPP Release 19 5G Advanced standards and uses six antennas. This is designed to improve high-speed data performance and reliability on compatible networks.
Despite these similarities, Qualcomm has made several changes to separate the standard processor from the Extreme model.
CPU and GPU Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 brings noticeable gains over the previous generation. Qualcomm says its CPU is 10% faster while delivering 37% better power efficiency.
The updated Adreno GPU is also 35% faster than the previous generation. At the same time, it can reduce power consumption by up to 40%.
The Extreme version pushes performance further. Its CPU is 13% faster, while graphics performance increases by 44%.
Qualcomm has also equipped the Extreme chip with 18MB of High Performance Memory. The company says this can provide another 12% improvement in power efficiency.
Gaming is another area where the Extreme model has an advantage. It features Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses matrix cores for AI-powered super-resolution and frame generation. Qualcomm says the technology can reduce power consumption by up to 40% during supported workloads.
AI Features Get a Major Upgrade
Both Snapdragon processors receive significant improvements for on-device artificial intelligence.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 uses an upgraded Hexagon NPU with a new Element Accelerator. Qualcomm says the NPU is 14% faster, while AI performance per watt improves by 20%.
The Extreme model goes considerably further. Its NPU is 35% faster and delivers 33% greater efficiency. It also has 50% more shared memory.
That extra capacity allows the Extreme processor to run local Mixture of Experts AI models with more than 30 billion parameters. This could give flagship phones greater ability to perform AI tasks directly on the device rather than relying entirely on cloud services.
Camera and Video Capabilities
Both processors feature Qualcomm’s Spectra ISP and Intelligent Pixel Control. However, the Extreme version has additional video capabilities aimed at high-end smartphone cameras.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can support 8K video recording at 60 frames per second. It also supports 4K slow-motion recording at up to 240 frames per second.
These features could make the Extreme processor particularly attractive to smartphone manufacturers targeting mobile photography and video enthusiasts.
Which Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Is More Powerful?
The two processors share the same fundamental architecture, but Qualcomm has created a clear performance gap between them.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is designed to deliver strong flagship performance while improving efficiency. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 adds faster CPU and GPU performance, more memory, stronger AI capabilities and additional gaming and video features.
Motorola has already announced that its Signature 27 smartphone will use the Extreme processor. Both Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 variants are expected to appear in flagship Android smartphones during 2027.
For consumers, the choice will ultimately depend on the phones manufacturers pair with each chip and how much the additional performance of the Extreme model affects pricing and battery life.
