Warm Autumn Holiday Europe: 10 Sunny Destinations

Travellers looking for sunshine after summer have plenty of options across Europe. A new ranking has highlighted 10 destinations that could offer warm weather and relatively low rainfall during the autumn months.

Interest in autumn travel is also rising. Google searches for “October holiday” reached around 80,000 over the past month, an increase of 28% from the previous month.

Villa holiday company Solmar Villas analysed 105 European destinations to identify locations with favourable autumn weather. The study also considered the likelihood of rainy days and the cost of flights during October and November.

Cyprus dominated the ranking, taking four of the top five positions. Temperatures on the Mediterranean island generally remain between 24C and 29C during the autumn period.

Cyprus Leads the Autumn Sun Ranking

Ayia Napa took the top spot. The popular resort is known for its beaches and lively summer atmosphere. However, autumn offers a quieter experience.

According to the study, Ayia Napa averages just 2.3 wet days per month between September and November. That makes it an attractive option for travellers seeking a beach holiday outside the peak season.

Limassol ranked second. The Cypriot city combines beaches, nature trails and a busy marina. It may suit visitors who want both coastal attractions and city activities.

Larnaca came third. The port city is known for its relaxed atmosphere and the Finikoudes promenade. Palm trees line the waterfront, while Finikoudes Beach provides a long stretch of sand.

Paphos completed Cyprus’ presence in the top four. The destination could appeal particularly to history enthusiasts.

Its Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area contains Roman and medieval remains, along with elaborate ancient mosaics.

Canary Islands Offer Another Warm Option

The Canary Islands also feature strongly in the ranking. Lanzarote placed sixth, while Fuerteventura ranked seventh.

Both islands can offer warm conditions during autumn. The study puts average high temperatures at around 26C.

Lanzarote is known for its volcanic scenery, beaches and clear waters. It has more than 150 kilometres of sandy coastline, giving visitors plenty of options for a seaside break.

Fuerteventura has a very different landscape. The volcanic island features lava fields, mountains and unusual rock formations.

The study highlighted the Canary Islands as an option for travellers particularly concerned about rain during an autumn getaway.

Greece and Malta Complete the List

Greece also appears several times in the ranking. The Athens Riviera came fifth, followed by Rhodes in eighth place and Kos in ninth.

The Athens Riviera stretches along roughly 70 kilometres of coastline. It combines beaches and sheltered coves with waterfront restaurants and other attractions.

Rhodes offers a mix of sunshine and history. Its Old Town features narrow streets and the famous Street of the Knights. The medieval centre is regarded as one of the best-preserved in the world.

Kos provides another Greek island option. Its mountain villages offer wide views across the surrounding landscape.

Malta completes the top 10. The Mediterranean island is popular with visitors interested in both history and film locations.

The historic city of Mdina served as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Its old streets and fortified walls remain among Malta’s major attractions.

Solmar Villas managing director Sharon Bradbury said weather could never be guaranteed, but the data offered a useful guide for travellers planning an autumn break.
