Brazil Police Accuse 16 Over Voepass Crash

Brazil police accuse 16 over Voepass crash as investigators inspect the wreckage of the 2024 Voepass plane crash that killed 62 people.

Brazil police accuse 16 over Voepass crash after completing a two-year investigation into the deadly 2024 plane disaster that claimed 62 lives. Federal investigators allege negligence, maintenance failures, and repeated safety violations contributed to the crash, marking a major development in one of Brazil’s worst aviation tragedies.

The case now moves to federal prosecutors, who will decide whether criminal charges will be filed against the accused.

Police Complete Two-Year Investigation

Brazil’s Federal Police formally accused 16 current and former Voepass employees, including company owner and president José Luiz Felicio Filho.

Investigators allege the group endangered air traffic safety through repeated acts of negligence, operational failures, and omissions that ultimately contributed to the fatal crash.

If prosecutors proceed with criminal charges and convictions follow, several suspects could face prison sentences of up to 12 years.

Aircraft Crashed Near So Paulo

The accident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a Voepass ATR 72-500 aircraft flying from Cascavel to Guarulhos International Airport suddenly lost altitude before crashing into a residential area in Vinhedo, near So Paulo.

All 58 passengers and four crew members on board lost their lives.

Fortunately, nobody on the ground was killed despite the aircraft crashing inside a residential neighborhood.

Investigators Cite Serious Safety Failures

Federal investigators said the aircraft experienced repeated problems with its de-icing system, which is essential for safe operation in icy weather.

According to police findings, the system malfunctioned multiple times during previous flights, yet the aircraft continued operating.

Investigators also allege that maintenance issues were either omitted or not properly recorded in technical logbooks.

Flight Cleared Into Dangerous Weather

Lead investigator Andre Ribeiro said the aircraft should never have been cleared to fly into severe icing conditions.

Police concluded that known technical problems combined with adverse weather significantly increased the risk of disaster.

Investigators also suggested that Brazil’s aviation regulator ANAC should review its oversight procedures following the tragedy.

Families Continue Seeking Justice

Lawyers representing victims’ families welcomed the investigation’s conclusions.

Attorney Thalles Andrade said legal action will continue against every individual and company found responsible for the disaster.

The families also intend to pursue financial compensation from all parties involved in the aircraft’s operation and ticket sales.

Crash Changed Brazil’s Aviation Industry

The investigation described the disaster as a turning point for aviation safety in Brazil.

Authorities believe the findings highlight the importance of stronger maintenance oversight, accurate technical reporting, and stricter operational standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The final decision on criminal prosecution now rests with Brazil’s federal prosecutors.
