Australia have suffered a double injury setback ahead of the third and final ODI against South Africa, with Nathan Ellis ruled out and Joel Davies leaving the tour.
Davies suffered a hamstring strain while fielding as a substitute during the second ODI in Johannesburg. The left-arm spinner will return to Australia and begin his rehabilitation.
Ellis, meanwhile, picked up a left-side strain after bowling four overs in the second match. He could not complete his spell as South Africa went on to score 365 runs and win the game.
The victory gave South Africa an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Ellis Set to Return to Australia
Ellis has been one of Australia’s leading performers during recent tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa. His absence leaves the visitors without an important pace option for the series finale.
The fast bowler will return home for further medical assessments and rehabilitation.
Australia hope Ellis can recover in time for the upcoming home ODI series against England. That series is scheduled to begin on November 13.
Ellis is also the second Australian fast bowler to suffer a side strain during the team’s recent tours. Billy Stanlake sustained a similar injury during the second ODI against Zimbabwe.
Davies Leaves Tour After Hamstring Injury
Davies travelled to South Africa as Australia’s second specialist spin option but did not feature in either of the first two ODIs.
His hamstring problem occurred while he was acting as a substitute fielder during the second match.
The injury means Davies will return home rather than remain with the squad for the final ODI. He is expected to concentrate on his recovery before returning to domestic cricket with New South Wales.
Australia have not selected replacements for either player.
Cummins and Starc Could Return
Australia could still strengthen their bowling attack for the final match.
Captain Pat Cummins is expected to return after missing the first two ODIs. Mitchell Starc could also come back into the side after being rested for the second match.
Josh Hazlewood has played both games and could be given a rest. If that happens, Xavier Bartlett could retain his place in the playing XI.
Australia now face the final match without Ellis and Davies. South Africa, meanwhile, will enter the game with the series already secured.
The final ODI will give Australia an opportunity to finish the tour strongly while managing their bowling resources ahead of the England series.
