Qatar has warned that any major disruption or closure of the Bab al-Mandab Strait could have serious consequences for global trade and the economy. Doha said further pressure on the key Red Sea shipping route could worsen existing problems affecting international supply chains.
The warning came during a weekly media briefing by Qatar’s Ministry. Director of Media and Communications Ibrahim bin Sultan Al Hashmi said shipping companies are already facing significant pressure as global trade routes remain under strain.
He linked the current difficulties to the prolonged disruption around the Strait of Hormuz and growing Houthi activity along the Red Sea coast. Qatar said another major disruption to an important maritime route could create much wider economic problems.
Bab al-Mandab Strait Faces Growing Security Concerns
The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a strategically important maritime passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. It is a major route for international shipping and plays an important role in the movement of energy supplies and commercial goods.
Al Hashmi warned that the global economy is already dealing with the consequences of regional maritime disruptions. A further closure involving the Bab al-Mandab route, he said, could make the situation considerably worse.
Shipping disruptions in the region can force vessels to take longer alternative routes. That can increase transportation costs and extend delivery times. It can also place additional pressure on global supply chains.
Qatar therefore urged countries to avoid actions that could further destabilise important international waterways.
Qatar Calls for Diplomacy
Qatari officials called on the international community to focus on diplomacy and constructive dialogue. Doha said de-escalation is necessary to prevent the wider Middle East crisis from creating additional risks for international trade.
The Qatari diplomatic corps also stressed the importance of maintaining secure shipping lanes. Safe passage through major maritime routes is particularly important for global energy deliveries and international commerce.
According to Al Hashmi, countries cannot afford another major disruption while existing shipping and supply-chain challenges remain unresolved.
Red Sea Disruption Could Affect Global Trade
The warning comes as concerns continue over maritime security in the Red Sea region. Houthi attacks and threats have previously prompted international shipping companies to reconsider routes through the area.
