The devastating consequences of reckless driving have been highlighted after two brothers were jailed for their roles in a street racing crash that killed a father and left his young son with life-changing injuries.
The tragedy happened near Welshpool, Powys, in November 2024, when the brothers raced each other home and their dangerous driving ended in a fatal head-on collision.
Father Killed During Dangerous Street Racing
Rhys Jenkins, a devoted father of two and respected rugby referee, died at the scene after his Toyota Yaris was struck by a BMW X3 driven by Abubakr Ben Yusaf.
His nine-year-old son, Ioan, survived the crash but suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital for emergency treatment.
Father and son had been travelling to Cardiff to watch Wales play Australia. It was supposed to be their first international rugby match together.
Instead, the journey ended in tragedy.
Court Hears Brothers Were Racing Each Other
Mold Crown Court heard that brothers Abubakr and Umar Ben Yusaf were travelling from Aberystwyth to Manchester when they began racing each other along the A483.
Witnesses described a series of dangerous driving manoeuvres.
Aggressive Tailgating
The brothers repeatedly drove dangerously close to other vehicles and flashed their headlights.
Risky Overtaking
Witnesses also reported reckless overtaking while the vehicles were travelling at excessive speeds.
Competition Between Brothers
Judge Timothy Petts concluded that the brothers were clearly competing with each other before Abubakr lost control of his vehicle.
The judge said their behaviour involved repeatedly taking unnecessary risks until the situation ended in disaster.
Crash Left Family Devastated
The collision caused catastrophic injuries to Ioan.
He suffered broken arms, a fractured rib and a perforated bowel, as well as significant emotional trauma.
His younger brother, Gruff, later described learning about his father’s death as the worst moment of his life.
Their mother, Caroline Jenkins, said the family continues to live with profound grief and emotional scars following the crash.
Brothers Receive Prison Sentences
Abubakr Ben Yusaf was sentenced to 14 years in prison for offences including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and causing death while uninsured.
Umar Ben Yusaf received two years and nine months in prison for causing death and serious injury by careless driving.
Although Umar’s vehicle did not directly collide with the Jenkins family’s car, the court found that his participation in the illegal race contributed significantly to the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Judge Condemns Reckless Driving
Judge Timothy Petts strongly criticised the brothers’ behaviour.
He said they had been “constantly riding their luck” through unnecessary high-speed driving before their recklessness resulted in tragedy.
The judge also noted that Rhys Jenkins had no realistic opportunity to avoid the collision because the events unfolded so quickly.
Police Warn Drivers About the Dangers of Racing
Dyfed-Powys Police said the case demonstrates the potentially devastating consequences of dangerous driving.
Investigators stressed that illegal street racing places innocent road users at enormous risk. No prison sentence, they added, can undo the suffering experienced by the Jenkins family.
Street Racing Can Destroy Lives in Seconds
The case is a stark reminder that public roads are not racetracks. Competitive driving and excessive speed can turn an ordinary journey into a fatal disaster within moments.
Drivers are urged to obey speed limits, avoid aggressive driving and never treat public roads as a place for racing.
