Around 200 Delhi University students marched through South Delhi on Friday. They demanded stronger safety measures for women and children.
The protest followed the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park. It also came amid wider concerns about women’s safety in the capital.
Students from Lady Shri Ram College, Gargi College, Miranda House and Kamala Nehru College joined the march.
The protest began near Kamala Nehru College. It later ended at Gargi College.
Students Raise Daily Safety Concerns
For many students, safety is a daily concern. They said the problem extends beyond major crimes.
Poorly lit roads are a particular concern. Public transport and areas near student housing also worry many students.
One student said she often asks someone to walk her home. She also shares her live location with several people.
Another student said women should not have to live in constant fear. She said safety concerns remain on roads and public transport.
Meanwhile, students also raised concerns about stalking and inappropriate recording in public places.
Students Demand Better Safety Measures
The protesters called for better street lighting across South Delhi. They also want safer and easier-to-use public transport.
In addition, students called for stronger security around areas used by students.
Organisers said patrolling has increased in some locations. These include National Park and Vikram Vihar.
Pink Squad patrols have also been strengthened. Students also pointed to increased monitoring near the Pink Booth and college gates.
However, protesters said security measures must go further. They want authorities to focus on making public spaces safer.
After the march, students gathered along Siri Fort Road. They discussed and drafted a list of demands.
Debate Over Restrictions on Women
The protest also focused on proposed restrictions on women.
Organisers said limiting women’s movement should not be the main response to sexual violence. They opposed tighter restrictions on access to public parks after sunset.
They also raised concerns about stricter hostel and PG curfews.
Instead, students called for safer public spaces. They want better lighting and improved transport options.
