The Elizabeth Siders Ohio case took a new turn Wednesday when the mother of 16 children pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and sex-related charges in Vinton County.
Siders appeared before the Vinton County Court of Common Pleas as prosecutors continued a case that began after authorities removed 16 children from a home in Hamden, Ohio.
She faces multiple counts of child endangerment. She also faces separate charges involving alleged sexual conduct with a minor family member. Siders denies the allegations through her not-guilty pleas.
Elizabeth Siders Faces Multiple Charges
Siders has been charged with 19 counts of child endangerment, according to court reports.
She and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., also face separate sex-related charges connected to allegations involving a minor relative. Court documents identify the alleged victim as a child who was at least 13 but younger than 16 at the time.
The sexual-abuse case expanded the legal proceedings against Siders after investigators uncovered additional allegations.
However, the charges remain allegations, and Siders is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Competency Evaluation Requested
Siders’ defense team has also sought a competency evaluation.
Her attorney argued that the court should determine whether she is competent to proceed with the criminal case. A judge had previously granted a request for an evaluation in connection with the child-endangerment proceedings.
The evaluation could affect how the case moves forward.
Meanwhile, the court has continued to address bond and contact restrictions involving Siders, her family members and the children.
16 Children Removed From Ohio Home
The case began after authorities searched a home in the Hamden area of Vinton County.
Investigators found 16 children living in what authorities described as extremely poor conditions. Reports said the children ranged in age from about 18 months to 18 years.
Authorities removed the children from the home and placed them under protective care. Reports also said some of the children required urgent medical attention after their removal.
Investigators further reported that the children had limited access to education and that some had serious developmental difficulties.
Other Family Members Also Charged
Elizabeth Siders is one of several family members facing charges in the broader investigation.
Her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and other relatives were also charged with child endangerment. Gary Siders Sr., the children’s grandfather, faced 16 counts in the case.
A judge ruled Gary Siders Sr. incompetent to stand trial after a competency hearing on September 9.
The competency issue has therefore become an important part of the wider criminal proceedings.
Children Remain in Protective Care
The children remain under the care and custody of child protection authorities while the legal case continues.
At the same time, prosecutors and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the household and the allegations against the adults involved.
The court proceedings could take time as attorneys review evidence, competency evaluations and the separate criminal charges.

The next steps will depend partly on the results of Siders’ competency evaluation and further court hearings.
Her not-guilty pleas mean prosecutors must prove the charges in court. The sexual-conduct allegations and child-endangerment charges will proceed through the legal process separately as the investigation continues.
