Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned against Lula foreign interference concerns during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. He called on countries to respect national sovereignty and avoid intervening in other nations’ electoral processes.
Lula spoke in New York on Tuesday, just before U.S. President Donald Trump addressed world leaders. His remarks came as Brazil prepares for its October presidential election and relations between Brasília and Washington remain tense.
“We will not allow the enemies of democracy, whether domestic or foreign, to undermine popular will,” Lula said. He added that Brazil’s democracy belongs to Brazilians and that the country would remain sovereign.
Lula Defends Brazil’s Electoral System
Lula described Brazil’s electoral system as modern and robust. He also warned about disinformation campaigns that could distort public debate during the election campaign.
The president said democracy faces renewed pressure from both domestic and external forces. He also declared that Brazil is “nobody’s backyard” and warned against outside involvement in electoral processes.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s political contest remains closely watched. Lula is seeking another presidential term, while Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro is a major challenger. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
US-Brazil Tensions Add to Election Concerns
Relations between Brazil and the United States have deteriorated during Trump’s current administration. Trade disputes have added to the tension.
The Trump administration has also supported Bolsonaro’s political camp. In addition, Washington recently designated two major Brazilian criminal groups, the First Command of the Capital (PCC) and the Red Command (CV), as foreign terrorist organizations.
Lula rejected the designations. Some Brazilian analysts and politicians have argued that the move could influence the political debate ahead of the election. Those claims remain contested.
Lula Rejects Foreign Role in Fighting Crime
Lula also addressed organized crime during his UN speech. He said Brazil recognizes the scale of the challenge but intends to handle its own security responsibilities.
The president called for international cooperation instead of foreign intervention. He said Brazil needs help stopping the flow of illegal weapons and money rather than foreign military forces operating in Brazilian waters.
His comments followed a new federal pilot plan targeting organized crime in Rio de Janeiro. The initiative aims to increase cooperation between federal, state and municipal authorities. It also focuses on intelligence sharing, coordinated policing and inspections along key highways.
Lula Criticizes the United Nations
Beyond Brazil’s election, Lula used his speech to criticize the UN’s response to major conflicts.
He argued that the organization has struggled to respond effectively to wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He also called for reform of the UN Security Council.
Lula urged world leaders to restore the UN’s role in dialogue and mediation. He said countries must choose between stronger multilateral cooperation and deeper global fragmentation.
The Brazilian president also warned about rising military spending and the growing number of armed conflicts around the world.

Lula’s UN address combined domestic election concerns with a broader call for international cooperation.
At home, he emphasized the need to protect Brazil’s electoral process from disinformation and foreign influence. Internationally, he called for stronger diplomacy and a more effective multilateral system.
