Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran expects a formal US response on Tuesday to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi made the comments after meeting Qatari mediators in New York. He said Qatar would present Iran’s ideas to Washington before delivering the US response to Tehran.
The Iranian foreign minister is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. He said the current discussions are focused on reopening the strategic waterway.
Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening Hormuz
Araghchi said reopening the Strait of Hormuz would depend on several conditions.
Iran has called for a seven-day ceasefire across the region. The proposal also includes ending hostilities in Lebanon.
In addition, Tehran wants Iranian assets held abroad to be unfrozen. It is also seeking the lifting of sanctions on its oil sector.
Iran has further demanded an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. In return, Tehran has proposed reopening the strait and resuming negotiations over its nuclear program.
Qatar Helps Relay Messages
Qatar has played a key role in passing messages between Iran and the United States.
Araghchi said the latest discussions with Qatari officials focused on possible ways to meet Iran’s conditions. The proposals would then be taken to the American side.
However, the two sides remain apart on several issues.
A US official said there would be no agreement unless Iran’s nuclear program is addressed. Washington has also said the timing of commitments remains a major issue in the discussions.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Central to Talks
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial energy route between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Before the current conflict, the waterway carried a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Disruptions have therefore created concerns across international energy markets.
Recent reports indicate that some energy traffic through the strait has increased. However, the security situation remains unsettled.
US and Iran Continue Diplomatic Efforts
The latest discussions follow separate meetings involving US and Iranian officials and mediators.
Iran says its proposal could lead to a reopening of the strait within days if its conditions are met. Meanwhile, US officials continue to insist that nuclear issues must form part of any wider agreement.
As a result, the next US response could determine whether negotiations move forward.
For now, Iran is waiting for Washington’s formal answer through the Qatari mediation channel. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the central issues in the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
