UN Chief Condemns attacks on civilian infrastructure as Iran-US tensions continue to escalate, warning that the growing conflict risks worsening the humanitarian situation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all parties to protect civilians, respect international law, and avoid actions that could further destabilize the Middle East.
His remarks came after Iran accused the United States of striking bridges, transportation facilities and other civilian sites during recent military operations. Washington has not confirmed those claims.
Guterres Expresses Deep Concern
Speaking at a UN briefing, spokesperson Farhan Haq said the Secretary-General remains deeply troubled by the worsening military situation and is closely monitoring developments across the region.
According to Haq, Guterres believes that civilian infrastructure must never become a target during armed conflict, regardless of the circumstances.
“The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned by the continuing military escalation between Iran and the United States,” Haq said.
He added that attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and elsewhere in the region are unacceptable and risk worsening an already dangerous situation.
Iran Accuses US of Targeting Civilian Sites
Iran has alleged that recent US strikes damaged bridges, transport hubs and other non-military facilities. Iranian officials argue that these locations serve civilians and should be protected under international humanitarian law.
The United States has not confirmed the allegations, and there has been no independent verification that civilian infrastructure was intentionally targeted.
UN Urges Restraint
The United Nations has repeatedly called on all parties to avoid actions that could further escalate the conflict. Officials warn that continued military exchanges increase the risk of civilian casualties, damage to essential infrastructure and greater instability across the Middle East.
