A deadly shooting at Seattle’s popular Bite of Seattle food festival has left three people dead and four others injured, including a two-year-old child, as investigators now believe the violence may have been linked to gang activity.
The shooting unfolded Sunday evening near the Space Needle, sending thousands of festival-goers running for safety as gunfire erupted in one of the city’s busiest public spaces.
Police Believe Multiple Shooters Were Involved
Seattle police said Monday that investigators now believe at least three suspects were involved in the gunfight.
One of the suspected shooters, a 19-year-old man, was killed during the exchange of gunfire. A 15-year-old suspect has been arrested and is being held in juvenile detention while authorities continue searching for at least one additional suspect.
Officials believe two rival groups exchanged gunfire, leading investigators to treat the incident as a possible gang-related attack.
Teen Suspect Remains in Custody
The arrested teenager waived his initial court appearance on Monday.
A judge ordered him to remain in juvenile detention while prosecutors review possible charges, including firearms violations and first-degree assault. King County prosecutors are expected to make a charging decision later this week.
Police say the investigation remains active as detectives work to identify everyone involved.
Victims Identified
Authorities identified the three victims as:
- Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44
- Ashley Whitehead, 56
- Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19, who investigators believe was one of the shooters
Villalba was described by family members as a devoted husband and father of three who was known for helping others.
Whitehead had recently moved to Washington from Alabama and was attending the festival with one of her daughters when she was struck by gunfire. She later died during surgery.
Friends and relatives remembered her as a kind-hearted woman with a vibrant personality and a love for nature and arts.
Several Others Injured
Four additional victims survived the shooting, including:
- A two-year-old boy
- A 23-year-old man
- A 27-year-old man
- A 39-year-old woman
Hospital officials confirmed all four have since been discharged.
Police said one victim was walking a bicycle when struck, while the toddler was with his mother during the incident.
Chaos Erupted During Popular Festival
The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. as the three-day food festival was nearing its end.
Thousands of visitors rushed for cover inside nearby buildings while others fled the area in panic. Vendors abandoned food stalls, leaving grills burning, ovens running, and meals unfinished as police secured the crime scene.
Authorities later escorted business owners back into the festival grounds so they could safely shut down cooking equipment and collect their belongings.
Resident Sheltered Families During Gunfire
Nearby resident Moises Perez opened his apartment to more than a dozen frightened festival attendees, mostly women and children, after hearing gunshots outside.
Perez, who previously lost a family member to gun violence, said helping others escape danger was an instinctive decision.
His roommate, William Large, said many of those seeking shelter were crying and visibly shaken by the terrifying experience.
Investigation Continues
Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes acknowledged there was initial confusion surrounding the number of suspects involved but said investigators are focused on gathering accurate evidence rather than rushing conclusions.
Authorities have increased security around the Seattle Center while detectives continue interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and searching for the remaining suspect.
The annual Bite of Seattle festival, first launched in 1982, typically attracts more than 350,000 visitors, making the tragedy one of the city’s deadliest public events in recent years.
