Apple has unveiled its latest desktop computers, introducing the Apple M6 Mac Mini and the M5 Ultra Mac Studio.
The new machines focus heavily on artificial intelligence. Apple is also promoting their ability to work together on demanding AI workloads.
However, buyers will face higher prices as the technology industry continues to deal with memory shortages.
Apple M6 Chip Brings Major Performance Upgrade
The new M6 chip represents a major step forward for Apple’s desktop lineup.
Apple says the processor is its first chip built using TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer manufacturing process.
The M6 features a 12-core CPU. It combines two high-performance cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores.
According to Apple, the chip delivers its fastest single-threaded performance yet.
It also provides around 20% faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and about 40% more than the M4.
M6 Focuses on Artificial Intelligence
Apple has built several AI-focused technologies directly into the M6.
The processor includes a 12-core GPU and integrated Neural Accelerators designed to handle AI workloads more efficiently.
The chip also offers storage speeds of up to 15GB per second.
Memory bandwidth reaches 170GB per second, giving demanding applications faster access to data.
These improvements could make the new Mac Mini particularly useful for developers working with local AI models.
M5 Ultra Becomes Apple’s Most Powerful Chip
Alongside the M6 Mac Mini, Apple introduced the M5 Ultra for the Mac Studio.
The M5 Ultra uses a quad-die architecture. It combines two dual-die M5 Max chips into a single processor.
Apple’s UltraFusion technology connects the chips with more than 4.4TB per second of bandwidth.
The design allows the M5 Ultra to deliver substantially greater processing capacity for professional and AI workloads.
Massive Memory Capacity for AI Models
The M5 Ultra can be configured with up to 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores.
It also includes a 32-core Neural Engine for machine-learning workloads.
For memory-intensive applications, the processor supports up to 512GB of unified memory.
Memory bandwidth can reach 1.2TB per second.
Apple says the M5 Ultra provides more than four times the peak AI computing performance of the previous M3 Ultra.
Macs Can Work Together on AI Tasks
One of the biggest changes involves Apple’s approach to local AI computing.
Both new desktop models support clustering through Thunderbolt 5.
This feature allows developers to connect multiple Mac Minis or Mac Studios and combine their resources for larger workloads.
As a result, users can run larger AI models locally instead of depending entirely on cloud computing.
Apple says four connected Mac Studios can achieve up to three times the inference throughput of a single system.
Higher Prices Reflect Memory Shortages
The performance improvements come with higher starting prices.
The new M6 Mac Mini starts at $899, while the Mac Studio starts at $2,499.
Apple’s pricing comes as the technology industry continues to experience shortages and increased demand for memory components.
Those market pressures have affected hardware prices across the industry.
Preorders Open for New Macs
Apple has opened preorders for the new desktop computers.
Most configurations are expected to begin shipping on September 22.
However, some models with 512GB of memory will arrive later in October.
The staggered availability means customers may need to wait longer for certain high-capacity configurations.
Apple Pushes Local AI Computing
The launch reflects Apple’s growing focus on running artificial intelligence directly on personal computers.
Rather than relying exclusively on cloud-based systems, the company is positioning its newest Macs as machines capable of handling increasingly sophisticated AI models locally.
The combination of faster processors, large unified-memory configurations and Thunderbolt 5 clustering could appeal particularly to developers and professionals working with AI.
A Major Leadership Transition at Apple
The launch also comes during a significant leadership transition.
The release is expected to be the final major hardware launch overseen by CEO Tim Cook.
John Ternus is set to succeed Cook as Apple’s leader at the end of August.
Therefore, the new Mac Mini and Mac Studio mark not only a major technology update but also an important moment in Apple’s leadership history.
Apple’s Desktop Strategy Enters a New Phase
With the M6 Mac Mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio, Apple is expanding its desktop strategy beyond traditional creative and productivity workloads.
The company is putting local AI capabilities at the centre of its latest machines.
For developers and professional users, the ability to combine several Macs could offer a new way to handle demanding AI models without sending sensitive or resource-heavy workloads to the cloud.
As AI computing becomes increasingly important, Apple’s latest desktop lineup shows how the company intends to compete in the rapidly changing market.
