King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, has died at the age of 34.
The prime minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced the king’s death late Thursday.
He said the monarch died at around 10 p.m. local time. However, officials did not disclose the cause of death.
Uganda Mourns Tooro King
The announcement triggered an outpouring of grief across Uganda.
King Oyo had remained an important cultural figure despite Uganda operating as a republic with an elected national government.
Traditional kingdoms in Uganda hold limited political power today. However, they continue to play a major role in the country’s cultural and social life.
Oyo Became King at Three
Oyo Nyimba became the King of Tooro in 1995 following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He was only three years old when he took the throne.
His coronation took place on September 12, 1995.
As a result, Oyo became the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
He later grew into the role and became a prominent symbol of Tooro’s identity and traditions.
Tooro Kingdom in Western Uganda
The Tooro Kingdom lies in western Uganda, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The kingdom has deep historical and cultural roots in the region.
Although traditional rulers no longer exercise the political authority they once held, they continue to influence cultural affairs and community life.
King Was Receiving Treatment in US
Balaam Barugahara, a minister in President Yoweri Museveni’s government, said shortly before the death announcement that the king was receiving treatment in the United States.
Officials have not provided further details about his health or the circumstances surrounding his death.
The king was unmarried.
However, Tooro’s prime minister said the succession of the crown would continue.
“This is an immeasurable loss,” Akiiki said, adding that continuity of the crown was assured.
Tributes Pour In
News of the king’s death quickly spread across Uganda.
Opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine was among those who paid tribute to Oyo.
“Most devastating news!” Wine wrote on X while offering condolences to the royal family and people of Tooro.
The king had also maintained a close connection with younger generations.
King Oyo’s Youthful Leadership
In April, Tooro’s prime minister praised the king in a birthday message.
He described Oyo as a monarch who understood the realities facing his people and belonged to the same generation as many of them.
His youth, the prime minister said, brought energy, fresh ideas and the courage to imagine a different future for Tooro.
King Oyo’s death at 34 now marks the end of a remarkable reign that began when he was just three years old.
His legacy will remain closely linked to the cultural identity and history of the Tooro Kingdom.
