Lungi Ngidi Injury Rules Him Out of Australia ODIs

Lungi Ngidi injury rules him out of South Africa's Australia ODI series.

South Africa have suffered another setback in their bowling attack ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia.

The latest blow comes after a Lungi Ngidi injury ruled the fast bowler out of the upcoming series.

Ngidi picked up a right hamstring injury while playing for the Titans against the Dolphins in the opening round of South Africa’s domestic first-class season.

Cricket South Africa confirmed after scans that Ngidi will now undergo a period of rehabilitation. His availability for the following Test series will be assessed closer to the start of that campaign.

Ngidi Becomes Third South African Pacer Out

Ngidi is the third South African fast bowler to miss the Australia ODIs because of injury.

Kagiso Rabada was already unavailable. Ottneil Baartman then joined him on the injury list after suffering a left hamstring problem during domestic cricket.

The latest Lungi Ngidi injury leaves South Africa with fewer experienced options in their pace attack just days before the ODI series begins.

The first ODI will take place in Durban on September 24. The second match follows in Johannesburg on September 27, before the series concludes in Potchefstroom on September 30.

Nqobani Mokoena Gets Another Opportunity

South Africa have responded to Ngidi’s withdrawal by calling up 20-year-old Nqobani Mokoena.

The young fast bowler made his ODI debut during South Africa’s recent series against Namibia. He played two matches and took one wicket.

Now, Mokoena has another chance to gain international experience against Australia.

His call-up also highlights the pressure injuries have placed on South Africa’s pace resources.

South Africa Face a Changed Bowling Attack

With Rabada, Baartman and Ngidi unavailable, South Africa must rely on a reshaped bowling unit.

Marco Jansen is among the leading pace options. Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka also remain part of the squad.

Duan Jansen has joined the group as Baartman’s replacement, while Mokoena now comes in for Ngidi.

That means several younger or less-established bowlers could have important roles during the three-match series.

Ngidi’s Test Availability Remains Open

The injury could also affect South Africa’s plans beyond the ODIs.

The Proteas are scheduled to face Australia in a three-match Test series beginning on October 9.

However, Cricket South Africa has not ruled Ngidi out of those matches. Instead, officials will assess his recovery closer to the start of the Test series.

For now, the priority is rehabilitation and a safe return to bowling.

Australia Series Comes at a Difficult Time

South Africa will enter the ODI series after losing several frontline pace options to hamstring injuries.

That situation could give opportunities to players such as Mokoena and the Jansen brothers.

At the same time, the coaching staff will need to manage workloads carefully. The ODI series is followed quickly by the three-Test campaign, making player fitness particularly important.

Updated South Africa ODI Squad

South Africa’s updated 16-player squad is:

  • Temba Bavuma (captain)
  • Corbin Bosch
  • Matthew Breetzke
  • Gerald Coetzee
  • Quinton de Kock
  • Tony de Zorzi
  • Bjorn Fortuin
  • Duan Jansen
  • Marco Jansen
  • Keshav Maharaj
  • Kwena Maphaka
  • Aiden Markram
  • David Miller
  • Nqobani Mokoena
  • Ryan Rickelton
  • Tristan Stubbs

The ODI series begins in Durban on September 24, followed by matches in Johannesburg and Potchefstroom.

South Africa Must Adjust Quickly

The Lungi Ngidi injury has added to an already difficult situation for South Africa’s bowling department.

However, the setback also creates an opportunity for younger players to step forward.

Mokoena now has a chance to make an impact against Australia, while other bowlers will be expected to shoulder greater responsibility.

South Africa will hope their replacements can fill the gaps while the injured pacers work toward their respective returns.
