Iran Shoots Down US MQ-9 Reaper Drone after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it intercepted and destroyed an American MQ-9 Reaper near the southern port city of Bushehr. Iranian officials said the aircraft entered an area monitored by the country’s integrated air defence network before a newly deployed defence system successfully engaged it. The IRGC Navy announced the operation in an official statement on Friday.
According to Iranian officials, radar systems detected the drone before it entered a protected area near Bushehr. Military operators then activated a newly introduced air defence system and destroyed the aircraft.
Iran did not disclose the exact location of the interception or the drone’s mission.
Officials also released no images or additional evidence supporting the claim.
Iran Highlights Improved Air Defence Capabilities
Following the announcement, Iranian military officials praised the country’s growing air defence capabilities.
The IRGC said its integrated defence network can quickly detect, track and intercept advanced aerial threats, including unmanned aircraft.
Officials added that Iran remains prepared to respond immediately to any perceived violation of its airspace.
They described the reported interception as another example of the country’s military readiness.
United States Has Not Confirmed the Claim
So far, US officials have not confirmed losing an MQ-9 Reaper drone.
The MQ-9 Reaper serves as one of the US military’s primary unmanned aircraft. American forces regularly use it for surveillance, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions in different parts of the world.
Washington has not released any official statement regarding Iran’s announcement.

The reported incident adds fresh uncertainty to an already tense security environment across the Middle East.
Bushehr remains one of Iran’s most strategically important cities. It hosts the country’s only operational nuclear power plant as well as several military installations along the Persian Gulf.
