Allianz Festival Sponsorship Ends After Israel Row

Allianz sponsorship controversy at the Festival of Ideas in Madrid

Allianz festival sponsorship has ended at Madrid’s Festival of Ideas after more than 20 cultural figures threatened to boycott the event over the insurer’s financial ties to Israel.

The German insurance company agreed with festival organisers to suspend its sponsorship before the event begins on Thursday. The Festival of Ideas is scheduled to run from September 17 to 20. It will feature more than 100 activities and prominent guests, including British author Zadie Smith.

The organisers said the decision would allow the festival to continue as planned. They also said the event should remain a place for open debate and a diversity of views.

Artists Threaten Boycott

The dispute began when a group of writers, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural figures announced that they would not participate unless the festival ended its financial relationship with Allianz.

More than 20 people initially signed the statement. The number later grew to more than 30 participants.

Among the signatories was Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen. Other participants included writer Alana S. Portero, philosopher Paul B. Preciado and musician Rodrigo Cuevas.

The group accused Allianz of supporting Israel through its financial activities. In particular, they pointed to the company’s reported purchases of Israeli government bonds.

The participants said they did not want the festival to accept financial support from companies they believe contribute to the Israeli government’s actions against Palestinians.

Those statements represent the views of the signatories. Allianz has rejected the accusations.

Allianz Rejects the Claims

Allianz said it strongly rejected the allegations made against the company.

According to Spanish media reports, the insurer defended its business practices and said it wanted the festival to remain focused on its programme, participants and audience.

The festival organisers described the sponsorship decision as a mutual agreement with Allianz. They also said they would cover the financial impact of losing the sponsor so the event could go ahead.

Marcela Vélez, one of the festival’s directors, said the organisation had decided to continue with the event despite the financial consequences.

The organisers also plan to remove the Allianz name from festival locations and materials where possible. Some printed material had already been produced before the sponsorship ended.

Festival Will Continue in Madrid

Despite the dispute, the Festival of Ideas is expected to open on Thursday.

The event will take place at several locations across Madrid, including Plaza de España and cultural institutions such as the Círculo de Bellas Artes. The programme includes discussions, lectures and debates covering philosophy, history and contemporary issues.

The sponsorship dispute comes against a wider backdrop of strong political and public support for the Palestinian cause in Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been a vocal critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Spain has also taken several measures concerning Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

For the Festival of Ideas, however, organisers say the immediate priority is keeping the event running.

The Allianz sponsorship dispute has now raised a broader question for cultural organisations: how should festivals balance private sponsorship with the political and ethical positions of their participants and audiences?
