Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York on Thursday.
The Ishaq Dar Abbas Araghchi meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The two ministers discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Dar stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and continued engagement. He said these efforts remain important for regional peace and stability.
Both sides also agreed to remain in close contact and continue discussions on matters of mutual interest.
Pakistan Pushes for US-Iran De-escalation
The meeting came as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that Islamabad had not abandoned its mediation efforts.
Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters, Sharif said Pakistan remained committed to helping both sides pursue de-escalation.
He described Pakistan as a sincere mediator between neighbouring Iran and the United States.
Sharif also referred to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which he said was signed by him, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
He acknowledged that developments after the agreement had become unpredictable. However, he said Pakistan remained focused on further diplomatic efforts.
Dialogue Remains Central to Pakistan’s Approach
Pakistan’s latest diplomatic activity comes amid continuing tensions in the region.
The Dar-Araghchi talks highlighted Islamabad’s emphasis on dialogue and sustained diplomatic engagement.
Meanwhile, recent US-Iran discussions in New York have also focused on possible ways to revive negotiations and address the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran Warns Conflict Could Reach Indian Ocean
At the same time, tensions remain high.
Yahya Rahim Safavi, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, warned that the conflict could expand toward the Indian Ocean if the United States launches another attack.
Safavi said the conflict had already spread from the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz toward the Red Sea.
He warned that further escalation could open new fronts beyond the current conflict zones. His comments were released in a video by Iran’s Fars news agency.
The warning adds to concerns about the wider regional impact of the conflict.
Against this backdrop, Pakistan continues to stress diplomacy and dialogue as part of its efforts to reduce tensions.
