New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opposed an upcoming event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Bhagwat plans to speak at a Manhattan event on August 29. Organisers call the gathering the Universal Oneness Celebration. They say it will celebrate Hindu American heritage and promote interfaith unity.
Mamdani said Tuesday that he does not support the rally. However, he also questioned whether New York City has the legal power to cancel a private event.
Mamdani criticises RSS ideology
Mamdani linked his opposition to his view of India’s political and social identity.
The mayor said his family taught him to see India as a pluralistic and secular republic. He said every Indian should have a sense of belonging.
Mamdani also criticised what he described as an increasingly exclusionary political movement.
He said that development has troubled him because of its potential impact on India’s minorities.
Bhagwat event planned for August 29
Bhagwat will address the gathering at Madison Square Garden, according to reports. Organisers expect around 5,000 people to attend the event.
American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue organised the programme. Several Hindu American groups support the event.
The organisers say the celebration focuses on unity, mutual respect and interfaith dialogue. Critics, however, have objected to Bhagwat’s participation.
Several local organisations have raised concerns about the RSS and its record on minority rights.
RSS rejects accusations of intolerance
The RSS has faced criticism over its role in Indian politics and its treatment of religious minorities.
The organisation rejects accusations that it promotes intolerance. It describes itself as a Hindu-centric cultural and civilisational movement.
The BJP, India’s ruling party, also rejects claims that its policies discriminate against minorities.
Human rights organisations and international bodies have raised concerns about religious freedom in India. They have pointed to issues involving minority rights, hate speech and religious policies.
City may not cancel private event
Although Mamdani opposes event, the mayor acknowledged an important legal limitation.
He said he does not know whether the city has jurisdiction to cancel a privately organised gathering. That means his opposition does not automatically give City Hall the power to stop the programme.
The issue has therefore created a debate over political expression, religious gatherings and government authority.
Mamdani’s comments have also attracted criticism from supporters of Bhagwat and the RSS. At the same time, civil rights and interfaith groups have continued to challenge the planned appearance.
Debate likely to continue
The August 29 event is now attracting attention well beyond New York’s Hindu American community.
Mamdani has made his position clear. He does not support Bhagwat’s appearance.
However, the mayor has also acknowledged that the city may lack the authority to prevent the private gathering.
Unless the organisers change their plans, Bhagwat is expected to appear at the New York event on August 29. The controversy is likely to continue as supporters and opponents debate the RSS, religious freedom and the right to hold political and cultural gatherings.
