A powerful nor’easter storm has prompted New York and New Jersey officials to declare states of emergency as the system threatens the Northeast with heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and travel disruptions.
The storm was expected to affect areas from Maine to Washington, D.C., with officials warning residents to prepare for difficult conditions. New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged people to take the storm seriously.
Strong Winds and Flooding Threat
The National Weather Service warned that some areas could experience wind gusts of up to 55 mph. Such winds can make driving difficult and may bring down tree limbs or cause power outages.
New York City officials also warned residents about possible basement flooding, power interruptions and travel problems.
Meanwhile, the storm created dangerous conditions along the coast, including the risk of powerful rip currents and coastal flooding.
Flights and Train Services Could Face Disruptions
The storm also threatened transportation across the Northeast.
The Federal Aviation Administration warned that strong winds could disrupt flights at New York City’s three major airports. American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines waived change fees for eligible travelers and encouraged customers to consider postponing some Northeast trips.
Amtrak also warned passengers that services could be affected by the storm.
Concerts and Sporting Events Canceled
The severe weather also forced organizers to cancel major events.
The Global Citizen Festival in Central Park was canceled because organizers said conditions were not expected to be safe for tens of thousands of attendees, artists and staff. The 2026 event was scheduled to feature performers including Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys and other major artists.
Ed Sheeran’s concerts near Boston were also canceled because of the storm.
Several other sporting and entertainment events were postponed or rescheduled as officials prepared for the worsening weather.
Officials Urge Residents to Prepare
Authorities across the Northeast urged residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during the worst conditions.
The storm also arrived as the United Nations General Assembly was wrapping up in New York. Despite the challenging weather forecast, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization had dealt with difficult circumstances before.
The nor’easter storm has already caused widespread disruptions, with flooding, strong winds and power outages becoming major concerns for communities along the East Coast.
