Shakib Al Hasan Home Attacked After Hasina Event

Police inspect the damaged ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan after an attack in Magura following Sheikh Hasina's media appearance.

Shakib Al Hasan home attacked became one of Bangladesh’s biggest headlines after unidentified attackers targeted the former cricket captain’s ancestral home in Magura. The attack happened shortly after Shakib joined former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s first public media event since she lost power in 2024.

Police confirmed that the house was empty during the attack. No one suffered injuries.

Attackers Target Shakib’s Family Home

The attackers stormed Shakib Al Hasan’s family residence in Magura, about 170 kilometres southwest of Dhaka.They smashed several windows before throwing petrol bombs at the building. The attack started a fire on the upper floor.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. Police later secured the area and launched an investigation.

Violence Follows Hasina’s Public Appearance

The attack came only hours after Shakib joined an online discussion hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi.During the event, Sheikh Hasina spoke publicly for the first time since leaving Bangladesh in 2024.

She declared that she intends to return to Bangladesh despite facing legal action. She also urged authorities to lift the ban on the Awami League, which lost permission to operate after her removal from power.

Shakib Continues to Stay Abroad

Shakib Al Hasan has lived outside Bangladesh since political unrest forced Hasina from office.

The former cricket star entered politics in 2024 after winning a parliamentary seat as an Awami League candidate.Authorities continue to investigate him over allegations that include murder, fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering.Shakib has not issued any public statement about the attack on his home.

Bangladesh Criticises India

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry criticised India for allowing Hasina’s media appearance.Hasina has stayed in New Delhi since August 2024 after leaving Bangladesh during mass protests.

Bangladesh has requested her extradition. Indian officials say they are reviewing the request under legal procedures.

Political Crisis Remains Unresolved

A Bangladeshi war crimes tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia in November 2025 over the government’s response to the 2024 student protests.Hasina continues to reject all charges. She insists the case is politically motivated.

The attack on Shakib Al Hasan’s home shows that political tensions remain high. Nearly two years after Bangladesh’s dramatic political change, divisions continue to shape the country’s political landscape.
