Tim Curry Dies at 80
English actor Tim Curry, celebrated for his unforgettable performance as Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died at the age of 80.
Curry first portrayed the flamboyant character on stage before taking the role to the big screen. The 1975 film initially struggled at the box office but gradually developed a devoted following and became one of cinema’s most enduring cult classics.
His Frank-N-Furter performance remains the role most closely associated with his career. Curry brought a distinctive combination of humour, confidence and theatrical energy to the character, helping make the film a lasting part of popular culture.
Curry’s manager confirmed his death to CBS, the BBC’s US news partner. His passing marks the end of a career that stretched across film, television and theatre.
Tim Curry’s Career Beyond Rocky Horror
Born in Cheshire in 1946, Curry began his professional acting career after university. His first major stage opportunity came with the original London production of Hair in 1968.
Five years later, fellow performer Richard O’Brien invited Curry to audition for his new musical. Curry won the role of Frank-N-Furter, the eccentric scientist at the centre of the story.
The production opened at London’s Royal Court in 1973 and quickly attracted attention. Its success eventually led to the film adaptation, which featured Curry alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and O’Brien.
Although The Rocky Horror Picture Show did not become an immediate cinema success, audiences gradually turned it into a phenomenon. The film went on to achieve legendary cult status and holds the record for the longest-running theatrical release in film history.
A Versatile Screen and Stage Performer
Curry also became known for taking on very different characters. He played the terrifying Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, a performance that introduced him to a new generation of horror fans.
His film credits included The Hunt for Red October and Home Alone 2. He also played Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island in 1996.
On Broadway, Curry earned three Tony Award nominations, further highlighting his versatility as a performer.
His career crossed generations and genres, but Frank-N-Furter remained his defining creation. For millions of fans, Curry’s performance helped transform The Rocky Horror Picture Show from an unusual musical into a global cultural landmark.
