Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln will get a break in Thailand as the US aircraft carrier makes a planned stop for rest and recreation, according to a Thai Navy spokesman.
The carrier has around 5,000 sailors and Marines onboard. It has remained at sea since November 2025 and has spent recent months operating in the Middle East during the US-Israeli war with Iran.
The planned visit comes as the ship faces scrutiny in the United States over living conditions and the mental health of its crew. US lawmakers have raised concerns following reports of deteriorating conditions onboard, including two alleged suicide attempts.
Sailors Expected in Pattaya
Royal Thai Navy spokesman Paraj Ratanajaipan confirmed that US sailors would visit Pattaya, a popular resort city south of Bangkok.
He described the visit as an opportunity for “rest and recreation” but declined to confirm reports that the carrier would arrive between September 2 and 6.
Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches said the sailors could provide a boost to the local economy. He estimated that their spending could generate between 5 million and 15 million baht, equivalent to roughly $150,000 to $450,000.
Pattaya has a long connection with US military personnel. The city grew rapidly during the Vietnam War after American troops began visiting during periods of leave.
Concerns Over USS Abraham Lincoln
The USS Abraham Lincoln has attracted attention because of the length of its current deployment. The carrier has spent months at sea while supporting US military operations in the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump has rejected concerns about the ship’s deployment and dismissed suggestions that the carrier had remained at sea for too long.
Trump has also confirmed that another US aircraft carrier will eventually replace the Lincoln in the Middle East.
For the crew, the planned Thailand stop could provide an important period away from the demands of a lengthy deployment. Thai officials expect the visit to benefit both the sailors and Pattaya’s tourism economy.
