US Saudi Arms Deal: $2 Billion Weapons Package Includes 20,000 APKWS
The US Saudi arms deal has moved forward after the United States approved a potential weapons package worth nearly $2 billion for Saudi Arabia. The proposed agreement would strengthen the long-standing security relationship between Washington and Riyadh as tensions remain high across the Middle East.
The US State Department said the proposed sale supports American foreign policy and national security interests. Officials also said the package would improve Saudi Arabia’s defence capabilities as the kingdom remains a key US security partner and a designated Major Non-NATO Ally.
US Saudi Arms Deal Includes 20,000 APKWS
The proposed US Saudi arms deal would allow Saudi Arabia to purchase up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS), along with associated equipment, support and warheads.
APKWS systems can convert standard Hydra 70 rockets into precision-guided weapons. The technology is designed to improve targeting accuracy and give military forces greater precision during operations.
If the agreement proceeds, BAE Systems would serve as the principal contractor. The company is based in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Washington Cites Regional Security
US officials said the proposed weapons sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend its territory against current and emerging threats.
Washington also said the agreement could improve military coordination between Saudi Arabia, the United States and other regional partners.
The proposed sale comes as security concerns remain high across the Middle East. Regional instability, attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and broader tensions involving Iran have increased pressure on Gulf states to strengthen their defence capabilities.
Congress Will Review the Proposed Sale
Although the US State Department has approved the potential sale, the agreement must still go through the formal US foreign military sales process.
Congressional notification forms part of that process. Lawmakers will have an opportunity to review the proposed package before the sale can move toward final contracts and implementation.
The approval therefore does not mean that Saudi Arabia has immediately received the weapons. Additional steps must be completed before the agreement becomes final.
