X Original Content Rewards Program replaces revenue sharing
The X Original Content Rewards Program is replacing X’s existing revenue-sharing system, changing how eligible creators can earn money from their posts. X has stopped accepting new applications for the old program and plans to close it after September 7.
Under the X Original Content Rewards Program, creators can earn money based on qualified impressions generated by their original content.
What counts as original content on X?
X says the X Original Content Rewards Program will reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary to the platform.
Qualifying content can include:
-
- Original writing and reporting
-
- Photos and videos created by users
-
- Original memes and illustrations
-
- Meaningful commentary or analysis on existing posts
- Creative edits of existing videos or photos
Simply reposting another user’s content will not automatically qualify.
X says captions or text overlays that only describe someone else’s content will not count as original. The creator must add meaningful value through commentary, analysis or creative work.
Who can join the X Original Content Rewards Program?
Creators must meet several requirements before joining the X Original Content Rewards Program.
Applicants must:
-
- Be at least 18 years old
-
- Live in an eligible country
-
- Have a Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription
-
- Have at least 500 verified followers
- Receive at least 500,000 Home timeline views from verified users during the previous 90 days
X says qualifying impressions must come from unique views by Premium users.
Creators must continue meeting the eligibility requirements after joining the program to remain eligible for payments.
Existing creators must reapply
Creators already enrolled in X’s revenue-sharing program will need to apply for the X Original Content Rewards Program once they become eligible on September 8.
Creators who were not part of the old system can also apply if they meet the new requirements.
The change marks a shift in X’s approach to creator monetization, with greater emphasis on original content and qualified audience engagement.
X previously changed its revenue-sharing rules
X changed its revenue-sharing program in March to place greater emphasis on engagement from users in creators’ home regions.
The move appeared designed to reduce manipulation involving accounts that presented themselves as being based in the United States while operating elsewhere.
It remains unclear whether the X Original Content Rewards Program will maintain the same regional engagement rules.
What the new X creator program means
The X Original Content Rewards Program gives creators a new monetization route as X phases out its previous revenue-sharing system.
The key difference is the focus on original work and qualified impressions. Creators will need to meet X’s eligibility requirements and continue producing content that the platform considers valuable and original.
