Iran has discovered more than 200 billion cubic metres of natural gas in southern Fars province. The find could strengthen the country’s energy sector in the coming years.
Iranian Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced the discovery. He said the field contains more than 200 billion cubic metres of gas. More than 160 billion cubic metres could be commercially recoverable.
New Gas Discovery in Fars Province
Paknejad described the gas as “sweet” gas. This means it contains very little hydrogen sulphide. The toxic and corrosive compound can make gas production more difficult and expensive.
The low sulphur content could therefore reduce some development costs. However, Iran will need to build production facilities and other infrastructure before it can use the new reserves.
The discovery will not increase Iran’s gas supply immediately. Developing a large gas field can take several years. Bloomberg reported that Iran could need years to bring the field into production.
Iran Faces Pressure on Energy Infrastructure
The discovery comes as Iran faces serious challenges across its energy sector. The country’s infrastructure has suffered damage during the wider Middle East conflict.
Military strikes have affected several energy facilities and transportation routes. Gas production sites and oil storage facilities have also faced disruption.
These challenges have increased pressure on Iran to protect and rebuild its energy infrastructure. The new gas reserves could become an important resource as the country works to expand production.
Gas Reserves Could Strengthen Iran’s Energy Sector
The Fars province discovery gives Iran another potentially valuable source of natural gas. More than 160 billion cubic metres could eventually become available for production.
However, the country still needs time and investment to develop the field. New pipelines, processing facilities and production equipment will play a key role.
For now, the discovery offers long-term potential rather than an immediate boost to gas supplies. If Iran successfully develops the field, it could strengthen domestic energy production in the years ahead.
