Amazon’s new Texas data center could become one of the largest single sources of climate emissions in the United States. The company plans to power the artificial intelligence facility with its own natural gas plant rather than relying fully on the strained Texas electricity grid.
The facility in Pecos County has permits allowing emissions of up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. If the plant reaches that level, its emissions would more than double those of the James H. Miller Jr. coal plant in Alabama, which currently ranks among the country’s largest individual sources of greenhouse gases.
Amazon Texas Data Center Will Use Natural Gas
Amazon plans to build an on-site power system with 35 natural gas turbines. The turbines could generate more than 7 gigawatts of electricity for the data center.
The decision reflects the enormous amount of electricity that modern artificial intelligence systems require. Data centers need large and reliable power supplies to run servers, cooling equipment and other infrastructure around the clock.
Texas already faces growing pressure on its power system. At the same time, new data centers can wait years for grid connections.

Amazon Says Texas Families Will Not Pay More
Amazon has defended its decision to generate power at the site.
The company said producing electricity independently will prevent the data center from increasing electricity costs for Texas households. Amazon also said it is exploring on-site solar power and battery storage as ways to reduce its dependence on natural gas.
Those additions could eventually lower the facility’s reliance on fossil fuels. However, the scale and timing of any renewable-energy expansion remain important questions.
