BiliBili Global Expansion Targets Western Creators

BiliBili global expansion targeting Western creators to compete with YouTube

BiliBili is expanding beyond China as the entertainment platform targets Western creators and looks to challenge YouTube in international markets. The 17-year-old company has already become one of the world’s most visited websites and now wants to build a stronger global presence.

Often described as China’s answer to YouTube, BiliBili has become a major entertainment platform for Chinese audiences. Since YouTube remains unavailable in China, the service has built a large domestic following through user-generated videos, original shows and other entertainment content.

BiliBili Targets Global Creators

BiliBili has attracted attention from Western creators before. MrBeast, one of the world’s biggest online creators, joined the platform in 2024 and quickly attracted millions of views.

Now, BiliBili wants to reverse that trend. Instead of simply bringing Western creators to Chinese audiences, the company wants to bring its platform to creators around the world.

The timing could prove useful. TikTok’s global success has already introduced international audiences to Chinese digital trends and East Asian creators. Meanwhile, microdramas and social commerce continue to gain popularity in Western markets.

BiliBili Expands Overseas

According to reports from Semafor, BiliBili appears to be preparing for a major international push. Job listings, product information and discussions among users point to a renewed overseas expansion.

The company has reportedly relaunched an international platform after shutting it down last year. It has also removed identification requirements for overseas users and started recruiting employees in several major cities.

Those locations include Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul and Tokyo.

BiliBili’s Creator Hub has also publicly indicated that the company plans to go global, adding to expectations about its international ambitions.

Can BiliBili Challenge YouTube?

However, competing with YouTube and TikTok will not be easy. Both platforms already have huge international audiences and strong creator communities.

BiliBili also faces lessons from other Chinese platforms. RedNote, known as Xiaohongshu in China, gained attention among Western users during concerns about a possible TikTok ban in the United States.

However, much of that interest appeared temporary. Many Western users treated the platform as a novelty before returning to familiar services.

BiliBili hopes to take a different approach by giving creators more opportunities to earn money.

Creator Monetization Could Drive Growth

One of BiliBili’s most distinctive features is its danmu commenting system. Viewers can post comments that move across the screen while a video plays.

Creators can also earn money through fan support and other monetization features. That approach could become an important selling point as BiliBili tries to attract established Western creators.

The platform’s community also includes a large younger audience. Some users describe its audience as highly educated and relatively affluent, with a strong Gen Z presence.

If BiliBili can prove that creators can build audiences and earn reliable income on the platform, more Western influencers could take notice.

For now, the company faces a major challenge: convincing creators and viewers to spend time on another platform when YouTube and TikTok already dominate the global video market. Its international expansion will show whether BiliBili can turn its success in China into a genuine global competitor.
