The dispute has disrupted court sessions and triggered public clashes between justices. It has also raised allegations involving political bias, corruption and the handling of a major bank investigation.
At the center of the turmoil are Justices Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça. Their increasingly bitter dispute has divided the court and turned the Banco Master scandal into a major election issue.
What Started the Supreme Court Crisis?
The crisis grew out of the collapse of Banco Master, a lender that had billions of dollars in assets before authorities shut it down.
Investigators accuse the bank’s former head, Daniel Vorcaro, of involvement in a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme. Vorcaro has faced allegations involving political and business figures.
Mendonça, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by former President Jair Bolsonaro, has overseen parts of the Banco Master case.
The investigation also brought attention to Moraes. A Federal Police report raised questions about his contacts with Vorcaro. In addition, a law firm belonging to Moraes’ wife had a multimillion-dollar consulting agreement with Banco Master.
Moraes denies wrongdoing. He has also challenged Mendonça’s handling of the investigation.
Why Are the Justices Fighting?

Mendonça released material connected to the case that raised questions about Moraes. In response, Moraes accused his colleague of overstepping his authority and pursuing the matter for political reasons.
Moraes also asked for an investigation into Mendonça’s conduct.
Meanwhile, Mendonça has faced accusations that he selectively released information from the Banco Master investigation. He denies political bias.

Flávio Bolsonaro Adds a Political Dimension

Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is challenging President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the October 4 election.
Flávio himself faces an investigation connected to Vorcaro. Court documents say investigators are examining allegations of corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.
Authorities are also examining about $12 million in transfers linked to a U.S.-based fund connected to Flávio’s brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro. The money reportedly related to a film about their father.
Flávio denies wrongdoing and says he sought legitimate private investment. Eduardo has also denied wrongdoing.
Why Does Alexandre de Moraes Matter?
Moraes remains a powerful and controversial figure in Brazilian politics.
Many Lula supporters view him as a defender of democratic institutions. He played a prominent role in cases involving Jair Bolsonaro and the former president’s supporters.
Bolsonaro was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison over a coup attempt following his 2022 election defeat.
However, Bolsonaro allies strongly oppose Moraes. Flávio Bolsonaro has repeatedly attacked the justice and has promised changes to the Supreme Court if he wins.
That makes the current dispute more than a judicial fight. It has become part of the presidential campaign.

Chief Justice Edson Fachin has tried to reduce tensions inside the court.
Fachin removed Mendonça from overseeing the Banco Master investigation. He also ordered the release of documents from the case, with limited exceptions where secrecy remains necessary.
