Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as the first foreign leader to visit him in office, sending a clear message that the United Kingdom remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The meeting took place at a British naval base, where both leaders observed military training programmes aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces and improving battlefield readiness. The visit highlighted the close defence partnership between London and Kyiv as the conflict continues.
UK Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Ukraine
During the visit, Burnham stressed that Britain’s backing for Ukraine remains unchanged despite the change in government.
“Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering,” Burnham said. He added that Russia should have no doubts about Britain’s determination to continue supporting Ukraine until a lasting and just peace is achieved.
The visit was intended to demonstrate that the UK will continue playing a leading role in supporting Ukraine through military assistance, training and advanced defence technology.
Military Training at the Heart of the Visit
Burnham and Zelenskiy met more than 200 Ukrainian military personnel and sailors participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a UK-led maritime security and counter-mine training programme.
The exercise prepares Ukrainian forces for future operations in the Black Sea while enhancing cooperation between Ukraine and its international allies.
British officials said the programme is already helping improve operational capabilities and strengthen Ukraine’s naval preparedness.
New Technology to Protect Ukrainian Drones
One of the major announcements during the visit was Britain’s commitment to supply newly developed electronic jamming technology designed to protect Ukrainian drones from enemy interference.
Speaking alongside Zelenskiy, Burnham said the British-made technology would help improve the effectiveness and survivability of Ukraine’s growing drone fleet, which has become a crucial element of the country’s defence strategy.
Billions in UK Support Since 2022
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, Britain has provided approximately £25 billion in total support to Ukraine.
The assistance includes around £16 billion in military aid and £5.6 billion in humanitarian, financial and other non-military assistance.
British officials said the support package reflects the UK’s long-term commitment to helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty and maintain stability in Europe.
Building on Previous UK Commitments
Burnham’s meeting follows former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Kyiv earlier this month, during which Britain pledged an additional €300 million to help equip Ukraine with a squadron of 16 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets.
The new government indicated it intends to continue strengthening defence cooperation with Ukraine while working closely with NATO allies to enhance regional security.
