CIA Director John Ratcliffe met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo on Sunday during a rare visit as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
Sisi’s office said the meeting also included Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad. The officials discussed conflicts involving Iran, Gaza and Sudan. They also discussed attacks targeting Gulf countries and growing threats to maritime security.
The meeting came as Washington warned that the regional conflict could escalate quickly. The US State Department has also urged Americans to reconsider travel to parts of the Middle East because of the security situation.
Sisi Calls for Diplomatic Solutions
During the meeting, Sisi stressed the importance of resolving regional crises through political and diplomatic channels, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
Sisi’s office said Ratcliffe praised Egypt’s role in efforts to find peaceful and comprehensive solutions to regional conflicts.
Egypt remains an important US partner in the Middle East. It also ranks among the largest recipients of US military assistance.
The talks took place as fighting and attacks across the region continued to affect transport and energy markets. Air and maritime traffic have faced disruptions, while energy exports have also come under pressure.
Maritime Security Becomes Key Concern
Ratcliffe’s Cairo visit followed a meeting between Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi leader is the kingdom’s de facto ruler.
The two leaders called for safe and secure maritime navigation through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The waterway has become a major security concern following fighting involving Yemen’s Houthis.
The Houthis have carried out attacks around the Red Sea and nearby shipping routes. These incidents have raised concerns about commercial vessels and energy shipments.
The disruption has also affected global oil markets. Oil prices have moved above $100 a barrel amid concerns about supply and transport routes.
US Strengthens Saudi Defence Ties
The regional tensions have also affected US-Saudi relations. US media reported that Washington had declined a Saudi request for military action against the Houthis.
The United States later approved a $24.3 billion deal for 48 F-35 fighter jets for Saudi Arabia. The US State Department said the aircraft would help Riyadh deter current and future threats.
Ratcliffe’s visit to Cairo comes as Washington continues diplomatic and security discussions with key regional partners.
For Egypt, the talks offer another opportunity to reinforce its role in regional diplomacy. Cairo has repeatedly called for political solutions to conflicts affecting the Middle East.
