Four Israeli athletes will not compete in this weekend’s international triathlon in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, after local race organizers objected to their participation.
The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC) said Thursday that it had made strong representations to Triathlon Ireland and Europe Triathlon after learning that four Israeli athletes appeared on the provisional entry list for Saturday’s City of Derry Triathlon.
The club said it only discovered the planned Israeli participation when World Triathlon published the provisional list. NWTC then contacted the relevant sporting bodies and made clear that it did not support the athletes taking part.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, athletes representing Israel will not be participating in the City of Derry Triathlon on Saturday,” the club said in a social media statement.
The Europe Triathlon Cup event could attract up to 200 athletes from around the world.
Organizers Explain Their Position
NWTC said its position does not target anyone because of religion or ethnicity. Instead, the club said it objects to Israel’s representation in international sport while Palestinians continue to suffer.
The decision has drawn criticism from Northern Ireland politicians.
Julie Middleton, a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for the Democratic Unionist Party, described the exclusion as a negative reflection on Londonderry. She said an international sporting event should promote the city’s hospitality and openness rather than become linked to the exclusion of athletes because they represent Israel.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland also said it had become aware of potential protest activity connected to the event through social media.
Israel Faces Sporting Protests
The Londonderry dispute comes amid wider protests surrounding Israeli participation in international sport.
Supporters of the Palestinian cause have previously protested against Republic of Ireland football fixtures involving Israel. Despite those protests, the matches have continued.
Ireland’s October 4 home fixture against Israel will take place behind closed doors at a neutral venue overseas. Israel has also played recent World Cup qualifying matches in Hungary and plans to use another neutral venue for its Nations League match against Ireland on September 27.
The issue has become increasingly contentious since the start of the Gaza war. Israel launched its military campaign after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
The conflict has also intensified international debate over Israel’s participation in sporting competitions. Critics have called for sporting bodies to take action, while others argue that athletes should not face exclusion because of their nationality.
Dispute Highlights Wider Debate
Israel has controlled the West Bank since capturing the territory in the 1967 war. Violence involving Israeli settlers and Palestinians has also increased since the October 7, 2023 attack, adding to tensions surrounding the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The withdrawal of the Israeli athletes from the Londonderry event now places another international sporting competition at the centre of that debate.
For the City of Derry Triathlon, organizers will proceed without Israeli representation. The decision is likely to keep attention focused on the growing argument over how international sport should respond to major political conflicts.
