Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing second Test against India in Colombo.
Jayasuriya also received one demerit point after hitting the boundary wedges with his bat following his dismissal. The incident happened after the final delivery of the second day’s play on Monday.
Jayasuriya Receives One Demerit Point
The ICC said Jayasuriya breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The rule covers inappropriate use or abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, fixtures or fittings during an international match.
Jayasuriya was dismissed with the final ball of the day. As the left-arm spinner walked toward the pavilion, he was seen striking the boundary wedges with his bat.
The incident prompted match officials to report his conduct. The ICC subsequently imposed a reprimand and one demerit point.
This is Jayasuriya’s first demerit point in the previous 24 months. The penalty therefore does not indicate a wider disciplinary record for the Sri Lankan spinner during that period.
Spinner Accepts ICC Sanction
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
Because the player accepted both the charge and the proposed punishment, officials did not need to conduct a formal hearing.
The charge came from on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid. Third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella also supported the disciplinary process.
The decision allows the matter to be closed without further proceedings unless additional disciplinary issues arise.
Third Player Sanctioned in Colombo Test
Jayasuriya has become the third player to receive a sanction during the Colombo Test between Sri Lanka and India.
India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando had already faced disciplinary action during the match.
The latest decision adds another disciplinary development to an already eventful Test. Jayasuriya will now continue with the match while carrying one demerit point on his ICC disciplinary record.
